Police Say Wiggin Died Of Blunt Trauma

RUTLAND, Vt. -- The man charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Castleton State College professor told associates his girlfriend "may have pushed my button one too many times," and that he hit her in the head with a frying pan, police said.

Linda Wiggin, 49, of Poultney, was found dead in her Poultney home Monday, a week after calling in sick to her job as a part-time English instructor at Castleton. An autopsy Wednesday concluded she'd been slain.

David Denny, 41, of Rutland, was taken into custody on a probation violation Tuesday, and on Wednesday police announced that he had been charged in her killing. He was arraigned on the charge late Wednesday afternoon.
Police said they were called to Wiggin's home on Sunday by a tenant who said there was "a suspicious person wandering around the residence by the name of David," later identified as Denny, the affidavit said.

Denny was gone by the time police responded, but they spoke to other tenants who told them that they had not seen Wiggin since the previous Monday, Nov. 10, an unusually long period for her not to be seen.

One tenant also told investigators that on Monday evening, she heard what sounded like a fight in Wiggin's apartment, including Wiggin screaming "help, please" or "help, police." Later in the week, the same tenant "heard Denny cleaning Wiggin's apartment a lot," the affidavit said.

Police also learned that Wiggin was missing her classes at Castleton, and had not been reporting for daily appointments at the Rutland Regional Medical Center, where she had been receiving treatment for cancer.

Police got a search warrant for Wiggin's home Monday, Nov. 17, a week after she had last been seen. Her body was found buried in a basement storage area. Blood evidence was found in the apartment.

An autopsy found the cause of death was blunt trauma to the head, caused by four blows to the left side.

Denny was taken into custody on a probation violation Tuesday at a home in Brandon. People living at the home were reported to have told police that Denny admitted to them that he had killed Wiggin.
