From what I've heard and observed, the whole agency is screwed up and it's going to come back to bite them in the ass in a couple years. They are so short on people they are expediting the hiring process and discovering things in peoples' backgrounds after beginning training. They lowered their standards and will get the kinds of recruits that are expected to be found with those lower standards...

My honest opinion? In 3-5 years, they will be just like FPS, and a lot of the lower-echelon manpower will be contract security.

(Shrug) FPS basically is responsible for the protection and risk assessment of Federal properties. I am sure you can find a ton of info on www.ice.gov. Lately FPS has gone from being traditional "guard" type assignments to a mixture of police officer and security assessment specialist, so to speak (inventing my own terms here). The former desk-jockey and door-rattling type security duties are now farmed out to contractors.

...then again you must have at least some familiarity with FPS if you are a "federal officer"???

According to my sources, the latest candidates are going to be pushed through the process, so your friends should be expecting calls any day now. They should have received emails from OPM with their scores and a date saying when the scores are good until.

The border patrol used to be the entry level position for federal LE, then most move onto 1811 positions in other agencies. Such as ICE, DEA, ATF, FBI etc. Its a stepping stone for most.

FPS, is an agency in turmoil. Without a clear direction and the lack of wanting to maintain a police department (which is what they are), they would rather save money and consolidate positions and farm out more jobs to contract guards.

FPS has Police Officers & K-9 0083
Inspectors LESO 0080
Inspectors 1811

It has promise to be a great agency but dont think it will get the chance.

I'm interested in applying for a Border Patrol position but I'm unsure if I meet the experience requirements... I'm a freshman at Western New England College (CJ Major) and have about 2 years experience working in retail positions and I'm also lifeguard certified. I've taken spanish for the past 4 years in high school so I know a little about the language. Would this make me eligible for the position? I just want to be sure I'm eligible before I say "yes" to the experience requirements on the online application. Thanks...

I'm going to be brutally honest here. It's not what people want to hear, but, you did ask and expect an honest answer.

Being a freshman in college with a whopping 3 months under your belt, working at the pools in the summer, being 19 years old, and working in the mall doesn't exactly make you a prime candidate for BP. While this is an entry level position, there are alot of military vets, college grads (or at least with a significant amount of credits), and those with prior LE/Corrections/security experience who are applying as well. I'll never tell anyone to not apply, always keep trying, anything could happen. Just don't be in such a damned rush and work on that resume some more.

SargeLorenzo, thanks for the honest answer, I appreciate it. I don't think I am eligible anyways because I did go through the online application and I clicked "yes" for everything in experince except for the one that asks about "gathering factual information and analyzing it in your previous job(s)." I said "no" to that so it gave me a page saying I was unqualified in the experience field. Oh well, I'm going to take your advice and keep building the resume though :) Thanks for the info.

BP like any job can be great or horrible, it depends on what type of enforcement you are interested you wish to perform.

Overall, most 0083 (federal police) except for US Park are mostly security based spots, very little enforcement. I worked for USSS-UD in the patrol division, we had the same powers as DC metro but most guys rarely got a lock up.

Back to BP, if you enjoy being outdoors, play hide n seek w/ drug runners/illegals, and want to live on the SW border it's a great place. I know they reduced the entry standards and PT is much easier now than 3-5 years ago. You will see more drugs in 3 years on the border than most will see in a career. It will also open the doors for 1811 gigs.

Personally, if I was heading out west I would go CHP.

California, Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas. Those are the geographical preferences for the southern border. A new northern border announcement just opened up on USAJOBS.com as well. Hope this helps.

Not sure if true, I read on antoher forum if you put in for the NB, there is still a chance you will get placed on the SB.

Doubt it's true, why would you have a NB annoucement and send those recruits to Cali/NM/TX/AZ...but it is the feds](*,)

We just got Northern Border trainees here in San Diego. They'll do 15 months or so down here learning the job then transfer up north to their respectiuve stations. It's like they're on detail for 15 months collecting all that sweet cash.
