Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must be at least 20 years of age by the date of the written examination and 21 by the date of hire.
Have completed 64 semester credit hours of academic study from an accredited college as accepted by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, or have an Idaho P.O.S.T. Intermediate Certificate. An out-of-state Intermediate Certificate equivalent may be substituted for the college requirement.
Be of high moral character and free of any recent major or habitual violations of the law, including drug usage or other activities or associations that would affect credibility as a police officer. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony and must possess or be able to acquire a valid Idaho driver's license. Certain other criminal or driving convictions may also be grounds for rejection.
Applicants must have uncorrected vision in each eye of 20-200 with the strong eye corrected to 20-20 and the weaker eye to 20-60. Applicants who wear contact lenses are exempt from the uncorrected vision of 20-200, but must have the strong eye corrected to 20-20 and weaker eye corrected to 20-60. Exceptions may be made by the P.O.S.T. Council.
Applicants must pass a physical fitness assessment and medical examination and be able to perform all essential functions of the position with or without accommodation.

Compensation Structure
Salary is dependent upon the officer's education or P.O.S.T. certification.

Probationary Police Officer - Probationary status for a period of one year from date of hire.

Police Officer I, II, III - Annual promotions based on satisfactory performance evaluations.

Shift Differential - Differential pay dependent upon shifts worked. 3% - Swings ; 5% - Nights.

Career Ladder - Senior Officer/3rd Grade, Senior Officer/2nd Grade and Corporal - Advancements based on specific criteria of longevity, training hours and career skills. Up to 12% additional salary can be earned through the Career Ladder.

Paid overtime or comp time for required work or court appearance.
A yearly clothing allowance of either $575 or $825 (dependent upon assignment) and a uniform cleaning allowance.
Health, vision and dental insurance for employee paid for by the city, cost share for dependent coverage.
Ten paid holidays.
Sick leave, accumulated at eight hours per month, with partial payment for accumulated unused sick leave annually upon reaching certain level of accumulation.
Retirement benefits under a State plan.
Accrued annual leave at eight hours per month, increasing with time on the department, to a maximum of 16 hours per month.
Life and disability insurance options.
Deferred Compensation Plan - contributions are matched up to 3.5 % of annual salary and are tax deferred.
Tax Exempt Post Employment Health Plan - City contributes 1% of member's annual salary.

Selection Process
Thank you for your interest in a career with the Boise Police Department. You have chosen to consider one of the finest law enforcement organizations in the country as your prospective employer. The Boise Police Department is a community oriented policing agency and is committed to working in partnership with the citizens of Boise to solve problems and provide a safe and healthy environment in which to live. A career in law enforcement will present you with many great challenges and at the same time provide you with rewards unmatched in most careers. Because of the challenges faced by the law enforcement officer today, our selection process is designed to select those applicants who are most equipped to excel in this profession.
The selection process is very thorough. The successful applicant and law enforcement professional must have certain characteristics and many skills and abilities. Some skills and abilities you must possess now. Some we will help the successful applicant attain during our initial training program for new officers. During the selection process, we will assess the skills and abilities you currently have. We will also assess the characteristics and traits you possess as an individual. It is of utmost importance to the Boise Police Department that we hire people who are of high integrity and are committed to serving all the citizens of Boise. We seek employees who will work in partnership with citizens to address their concerns in providing a safe and enjoyable environment in which to live.

The information below will provide you with information about the specific steps in our selection process and hopefully answer many of your questions about this process. The steps below are the normal sequence of events; however, an applicant may be scheduled to complete more than one step on the same day. Written Test
The written test is the first step in our selection process after submission of an application. This exam consists of both cognitive and non-cognitive sections. Applicants who pass the cognitive section of the exam will be screened further. This screening will consist of the steps described below.

Application Review
Applications will be reviewed to insure that applicants meet the minimum qualifications for the position, are willing to comply with general work requirements, and do not have disqualifying criminal or driving records.

Evaluation of Non-Cognitive Test Results
The non-cognitive sections of the written exam will evaluate applicants based upon various interpersonal skills and characteristics. Applicants must receive a passing score on these sections of the exam in order to receive further consideration. Applicants with higher ratings will receive greater consideration to proceed further in the selection process.

Oral Interview Phase
The oral interview phase is a critical step in the selection process and one for which you should be fully prepared. Applicants may be interviewed one or more times and those applicants who do not receive a passing score on an interview do not proceed in the selection process. These applicants, if committed to pursuing a career in law enforcement, are encouraged to improve upon their areas of weakness and re-apply in future application processes. Boise Police Personnel will offer suggestions for improvement to those applicants who are interested in re-applying and serious about continuing to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Among the many things to be assessed in the oral interview phase are:

Commitment to serving people equally and fairly
Interpersonal skills
Philosophy of policing
Judgment, decision-making, and problem solving
Communication skills
Preparation and work experience.
The interview or interviews will vary in length. Expect to be challenged by the interview, but strive to relax and be yourself. Honesty is of utmost importance during the interview as well as in all phases of the selection process. Dishonesty at any point in the selection process will result in your disqualification for employment with the Boise Police Department.

You should consider the oral interview phase as a critical step in our selection process. You should be well-prepared to be challenged intellectually and to demonstrate your commitment and enthusiasm to enter a career of service to and partnership with the citizens of our community. It may be helpful in your preparation to question others who have participated in oral interviews if you have not been through a similar process.

Personal History Statement
The Personal History Statement is a lengthy document that you will complete. This document will provide us with a great amount of information about you. Areas about which you will be asked to provide information are:

Personal identifying information
Relatives, references, and acquaintances
Residence information
Prior employment
Financial information
Legal and driving history.
This document will be used to aid in the completion of a background investigation. Providing any false information or intentionally omitting information on this form will result in your disqualification for employment with the Boise Police Department.

Physical Fitness Test
Applicants must successfully pass the physical fitness test approved by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training, to be accepted into the POST Academy. This test is comprised of the five following areas:

Vertical jump - minimum of 14 inches to pass.
Sit-ups in one minute - minimum of 15 repetitions to pass.
Push-ups - minimum of 21 repetitions to pass.
300 meter run - maximum time of 77 seconds to pass.
1.5 mile run - maximum time of 17 minutes and 17 seconds to pass.
If achieving the above minimum levels of performance required to pass this test is of concern to you, please contact Police Personnel for additional information and recommendations on how to prepare for this test.

Polygraph Examination
The polygraph examination is used to confirm the truthfulness of information already supplied to the department by the applicant as well as further explore areas such as:

Prior employment performance issues
Drug usage
Criminal activity
Blackmail issues
Medical issues.
Applicants must fully and truthfully respond to all inquiries by the polygraphist. Honesty is required of applicants as well as our employees. Information learned during the polygraph examination is held in strict confidence. Information is reviewed by Boise Police Department administration for compliance with our standards.

Background Investigation
The Boise Police Department places great emphasis upon completing a thorough and complete background investigation on applicants. Each background investigation takes an average of 40 - 60 hours of the investigator's time to complete. The investigator will review the Personal History Statement and Polygraph Examination as the first steps of the investigation. It is possible that an applicant may provide information in the Personal History Statement, or the Polygraph Examination may reveal information, that does not meet the standards of the Boise Police Department. If this occurs, the applicant will be disqualified for employment and a complete background investigation will not be conducted.

During a background investigation the investigator will contact numerous people who can provide information to us concerning your ability and suitability to serve the citizens of Boise as a police officer. The background investigation will include but is not limited to the following areas:

Current and past employment
Personal references and acquaintances
Criminal history inquiry
Driving history inquiry
Credit inquiry
Neighborhood contacts
Personal History Statement information.
The information provided to us is held in strict confidence. This information is not made available to either the applicant or other people. We require that applicants have positive work and personal recommendations and references. Problems in prior employment may result in your disqualification for employment with our department. Evidence of inability or difficulty to fairly and impartially work with, encounter, or relate to people will result in disqualification for employment. The Boise Police Department is firmly committed to the equal and impartial treatment of all people. The investigation will examine your background and who you are in great detail. We want to ensure that our employees will provide the citizens of our community and those who visit our city the best service possible.

The background investigation is reviewed by Boise Police Department administration. If disqualifying information is learned during the investigation, the applicant will be informed that he/she will no longer be considered for employment. If the background investigation is approved, the applicant will be offered a conditional offer of employment. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of the remainder of the selection process and the existence of a vacant position on the department.

Psychological Evaluation
This evaluation is completed by a licensed psychologist with whom the Boise Police Department has contracted. The applicant will be required to provide responses to several written psychological instruments as well as participate in an interview with the psychologist. This process will take several hours. The psychologist will explore numerous areas, including personal history, in evaluating your psychological fitness. A written report will be provided by the psychologist to the Boise Police Department which again is held in strict confidence.

Medical Examination
The Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) requires a medical evaluation for a person to be certified as a peace officer in the State of Idaho and POST has mandated certain medical standards. The applicant will undergo a medical examination to ensure compliance with these State standards and the non-existence of any medical concerns that would preclude an applicant from performing the essential functions of the job of a peace officer.

Drug Screen
Boise City is committed to a drug-free workplace and applicants must pass a drug screen as a condition of employment. Random drug screens also are conducted on employees to further ensure a drug-free workplace. The Boise Police Department additionally requires that applicants may not have used illegal drugs in recent past. Applicants may contact Police Personnel if they have questions about potential disqualification for recent drug usage.

Final Review
Upon completion of the selection process, all information gathered on the applicant is reviewed by Boise Police Department administration. Upon approval by the Chief of Police, a final offer of employment will be made to the applicant.

Probationary Period
During their probationary year, officers must successfully complete the Idaho Peace Officers Standards and Training Academy if they do not hold a current P.O.S.T. certification, as well as a ten (10) week Advanced Academy and a fourteen (14) week Field Training Program at the Boise Police Department.

The Department does not offer a lateral transfer program but after appointment, time in service is recognized within the Career Ladder. The selection process is comprehensive and in recognition of the burden this places on out-of-state applicants, we will make every effort to consolidate as many steps in the process as reasonably possible. Out-of-state applicants should be aware that they may be required to make more than one trip to Boise to complete the process.
