Dr. Dre Receives VIBE Legend Award Despite Disruption
A spirited performance of "How We Do" by The Game and platinum-rapper 50 Cent served as tribute to their father-in-music Dr. Dre, during the taping of the second annual VIBE AWARDS ON UPN at Santa Monica's Barker Hangar on Nov. 15. Dre was slated to receive the VIBE Legend Award, an award honoring his lifetime contributions to hip hop music.
Shortly following the performance, Snoop Dogg and Vibe founder Quincy Jones approached the podium to honor Dr. Dre. During Jones' speech, an unidentified man approached Dr. Dre and a fracas ensued, according to witnesses. Police reported that a 26-year-old man was stabbed during the melee and transported to a nearby hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
Despite the disruption, Dre went on to receive his award and the show continued with fervent energy as the audience rose to its feet while Snoop Dogg and Pharrell performed "Drop It Like It's Hot."
"We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred last night," said Kenard Gibbs, President of Vibe. "It is unfortunate that an event so many people worked very hard to create has been tainted by the actions of a few individuals. The VIBE AWARDS and Vibe magazine represent the best of urban culture and they will continue to do so. It is a testament to the true vision of the VIBE AWARDS that the magnificent talent and staff continued on to create a fantastic show."
Watch the VIBE AWARDS at 8 p.m. tonight (Nov. 16) on UPN. For more info on the VIBE AWARDS.
