BIDMC is not armed. We went through the 40 hour firearms training, and were issued our firearms. After the training we were told to hold off on carrying on-duty until our use of force policy could get approved. That was back on June 27th. The approval process is supposedly still in progress . Last week (roughly), we were told to give the firearms back. We will be issued them back when the use of force policy has been approved, and we have been given the approval to carry by the hospital. The hospital administration is supposedly also behind us carrying (from what we have been hearing from our dept. administrators). You read between the lines!!!
We were all hired under the premise (and were ALL TOLD) that this was an armed position, and we have not been given approval yet; and we have been here for 8 months. We are going on 164 days since firearms training was complete, and still no firearms. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)
As for the working conditions...I don't know what to say other than it is a work in progress. Please refer to the above, and imagine how you would feel. :BM: :BM: :up: How is the firearms process going over MGH??

Don't be so sure about that. We all brought that up to her the day after Sept. 11, and got nowhere with it then. Great if you do, but I know the management over there. The minute someone uses it....you know how the rest of the story fits in.RPD931 said:

Why do you need firearms in a hospital where you open and lock doors and do an occasional restraint? Boston PD and MSP is always around there, as well as MUNI, HOUSING PD and others. I feel sorry for all the guys that left real departments to go there, what a SHAFT!!CampusOfficer said:

Now I cant speak for BIDMC officers, but I work at the NEMC, and even though we do alot of the typical hospital bullshit (restraints, unlocks, etc.) we find and seize narcotics on almost a daily basis, in addition to fighting the local shitbags like its going out of style. Not to mention the Roxy and the other nightclub crowds causing the near riots in our garage every weekend. In the last 2 weeks we had 3 people stabbed, and brawls requiring A-1, D-4, and MBTA Police response to contain the fighting. Between NEMC and BPD officers we had 10 arrests. We had 15 arrests on campus just in October and November. Most of them were disorderly, drugs, or warrants, but nonetheless, its busy. Thats not counting the dozens of arrests that we dont make because its not worth the time or manpower. If we arrested every shitbag that is smoking crack, shooting up or stealing things inside the hospital, BPD would get real tired of holding our prisoners. Just FYI, ask around, BPD is not quick to respond unless you use the word GUN when you call them. Otherwise, youre looking at a delayed response no matter what.
Just to clarify, Im not saying that we should have guns. I know there is no way in hell that NEMC is getting firearms. However, they did have them at one point, way before my time. There are only a few people at NEMC that would be qualified to carry, and for that matter, that I would feel comforatable being around while they were armed.
In closing let me add that, I know being hospital "cops" isnt the most glamorous job in the world, but at least give us the respect enough not to make ignorant statements about what you perceive to be our duties...ie - "in a hospital where you open and lock doors and do an occasional restraint?"
I got to agree with csauce, I would not want to work for any of the Boston Hospitals. I am sure we all know the "true" meaning of ABC (Ambualnce before Cruiser) and not that I agree with that at all but where do you think all those crazies go and then who has to deal with them.
Boston is not always the quickest to respond unless they hear that "man with a gun" or an officer needs needs assistance. I think Boston is a great department but they have those one or two that spoil the organization.
I also work for a private ambulance company and have a ton of respect for all the men and women who protect our hospitals.
I think it is just ignorant for someone to say they "just open and lock doors." Obviously you have no idea what they do or the stuff they go through.

You were a pretty good doorkeeper / door locker on your postage stamp sized community college campus (AKA 13th & 14th grade) up until a few months ago. Now you go trying to crap on others? I used to work closely with the defunct H&H Police in Boston before they went private and all I can say is that they had balls of brass. Doing the job they did in the crappiest of hospitals known to man. The old BCH was a roach infested junkie haven. They used to have to sweep out the CHUD people from the tunnels between the hospital & the morgue. Try doing that with just cuffs, mace & a flashlight.

as for us unlocking doors, the bidmc public safety dept has 2 sides of the house... Police and public safety....
the police well you should know what police do, the other side does the unlocking and locking of doors etc.......
and yes both police and security (public safety) do respond to restraints.....

Hey I worked for three hospitals in-house safety and security for eight years in Boston and I know what the job is all about. I also knew a lot of people that worked at BIDMC when they were under Longwood. Besides, I knew that last comment would stir it up a bit. Good luck!!

We are on the base of Mission Hill and Roxbury, and our patch (yes I think it was stolen) says Police. We do a lot of exterior patrols as well as off site patrols. During the commute in the not so great area of Boston, it might be nice to have the appropriate tools for your trade (that were promised). I would think that if you worked in Boston at a hospital, you would understand. But i guess you don't.H50 said:
