Bellevue at a glance:

With a population of more than 115,000, Bellevue is the fifth largest city in Washington and is the metropolitan hub for business and transportation on the Eastside. The City has transformed from a suburban residential center to a thriving economic center, while preserving its neighborhoods and quality of life for citizens. Two floating bridges link Bellevue to Seattle.

Job Summary:

The position performs investigative and general police work involving the protection of life and property, apprehension of criminals, enforcement of laws and ordinances, and the preservation of the peace. Work normally involves patrol, investigation, and traffic enforcement duties, which may be performed in police vehicles, on motorcycles, on bicycles, or on foot. Bellevue Police Officers are strongly oriented toward community services and support law enforcement polices, which are community based. Initial assignment will be to the Patrol Section for a minimum of one year.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must be 21 years of age by date of certification of eligibility list
US citizen, able to read, write and speak fluent English
Ability to successfully complete the selection process
Possess, or be able to obtain and retain, a valid Washington State Driver's License.
Suspension or revocation of driving privileges in Washington, or any other state, is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
90 quarter, or 60 semester college credit hours by closing of application.
(Sealed transcripts must be submitted prior to a background investigation.
No felony convictions.
No convictions of domestic violence.
No illegal use or possession of marijuana within three years of the last date to file application.
No illegal use or possession of any other drug within three years of the last date to file application.
No illegal sale of any drug, including marijuana.
Misdemeanor convictions, including traffic violations, will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
In accordance with City of Bellevue Civil Service rules, applicants who have taken the oral board for entry-level police officer may not retest until a period of one year has elapsed from the date of the last test.

Selection Process:

Candidates who meet the qualification criteria must register through www.publicsafetytesting.com to compete in the written physical agility examinations. The City of Bellevue Police Department will then contact successful candidates for further testing.

The expected duration of the selection process from the time of application with publicsafetytesting.com candidates should anticipate the length of the process to last anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months. This includes the actual testing process and on-site background investigation. If an applicant has questions or concerns during or after any portion of the selection process regarding information on review, retest, or an appeal on a decision made, a written request must be submitted. The written request from the applicant will be forwarded to the Bellevue Civil Service Commission for review.

Written Examination:

Qualified applicants will select a test date and time available via www.publicsafetytesting.com. The written exam consists of reading, writing and other skills relevant to police work. A passing score of 70% is required to continue onto the physical agility portion of the exam.

Physical Agility:

Applicants receiving a passing score on the written exam will continue on to the physical agility test. This test measures aerobic capacity, anaerobic power, muscular strength and endurance. The physical agility test will be administered by www.publicsafetytesting.com.

Oral Interviews:

Applicants who successfully complete the written exam and physical agility exam will be invited to an oral board interview. The Bellevue Police Department will arrange a date and time. Candidates will be notified in writing.

Other Testing:

Applicants who successfully complete the written exam and physical agility exam and receive a passing score on the oral boards will be placed on a Selection List. When positions become available, a thorough background investigation will be conducted, including but not limited to: Criminal and Traffic checks, Employment and Personal reference checks and a credit check. Upon successful completion of the Background Investigation, you will receive a Conditional Job Offer and must successfully pass a thorough medical exam, psychological evaluation and polygraph screening. Information arising from the psychological evaluation and polygraph screening will be cause for further investigation and the results may disqualify a candidate. Candidates passing the medical, psychological and polygraph will receive a job offer for Police Officer Recruit.

Training:

Your career with the Bellevue Police Department starts with five months at the academy administered by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center. Curriculum includes patrol procedures, criminal law, crisis intervention, investigations, defensive tactics, crime scene processing and emergency driving.

Successful completion of the academy leads to field training with the Patrol division. For three months you will work under the supervision of specially trained field training officers. Upon successful completion, you will be assigned a squad in Patrol.
