NEW CANAAN - A man who barricaded himself in his ex-wife's Orchard Drive home was found dead in the basement in an apparent suicide after a nearly 90-minute standoff with police. According to New Canaan police, they responded to 117 Orchard Drive at 12:33 p.m. after receiving a 911 hangup call. Dispatchers called the residence and heard screaming in the background before they were cut off.
Officers at the scene found that the resident's ex-husband had entered the home without her knowing and assaulted and threatened her, police said. The woman was able to get out of the house and ran to a neighbor's house, police said.
The man, whose name has not been released, barricaded himself in the basement of the house and the police department's Special Response Team was called out. Officers attempted to negotiated with the man, but he would not comply with their requests, police said.
Norwalk police were also called to bring in a K-9 unit.
Police said at about 2 p.m., they discovered the man had committed suicide in the basement of the house.
