Heard that Otis is doing away with contract security and Barnstable County Sheriffs will be taking over that position. Dont know much more then that, but that could turn into a pretty sweet deal for you guys. Wonder if those positions will have to be bid on like BCI and Transport? Im sure the State Police is happy with it nevertheless.

Next CO class

Does anyone know when the next Corrections Academy is for Barnstable Co? I heard they were waiting for an official commitment from the state for funding? But they also said the second class would be in July and here we are in November :x

It's an interesting jurisdictional issue. I'm not sure if as a reserve base, if Otis is considerd state or federal property and what effect that would have on the authority of the Sheriff's Department while on site. Interestingly, I went to a Air Show and Barnes in Westfield a few months ago, and the whole thing was staffed by Hampshire and Hampden Counties, along with Security Forces. There was only one MSP unit there. I'm interested why the Reserve bases use the Sheriff's Departments for these jobs, before the locals and the state. Usually, at least in my area, the locals get called first, then the sheriff's or other towns if a mutual aid agreements is in effect, and then the state. Very interesting...

Otis/ Camp Edawrds is State property. It is a training ground for the Massachusetts National Guard. This is only a small piece of land such as the runways that are under Air Force control.

Barnes has a civilian/military security police force. The sheriffs you saw at the air show are simply a detail because Westfield PD couldn't cover it alone. Otis civilian security forces were under the same basic "contract" as the guys at Barnes, I wonder if they will be going bye-bye too?

I just found it interesting because there was absolutley 0 guys from Westfield. The only law enforcement there was Security Forces, 1 MSP Guy, Hampshire, Hampden, and Springfield Bomb Squad. I couldn't imagine Westfield couldn't fill one position, so I figured it might be some sort of contractual thing with the Sheriff's Departments to fill the security detail.

I may be wrong, but I believe that there were at least 6 MSP units there, I know at least three were on motorcycles.

You could be right. There was one marked vehicle trolling around the inside, and that's the only one I saw. All I know is that someone f'cked up the traffic on the way out hard. I sat in my spot in the truck in the parking lot for a solid two hours..Ugh.

Re: Barnstable County Sheriffs at Otis?

I worked the Air Show and there were alot more units than you mentioned, many undercover.

Westfield covers the traffic outside the base; this must take most of their force as no Westfield officers were available to assist with a PC that the SP's made of a drunk taking a leak on an A-10 landing assembly (no lie).

MSP have many units on the base, several at the entry points. They also cover traffic outside the base that falls outside Westfield.

Base security is not contract, they are SP's (Air Force equivalent to an MP). They are all over the base, on quads, bikes, and on foot. They do patrol the other side of the runway also, difficult for the average spectator to see. These guys are no joke; the base is theirs and you won't forget it.

The Sheriff's get the display areas, Hampden gets the ramp and Hampshire gets the movement of the planes.

As for the Springfield PD bomb squad, that was in response to a suspicious package; they were not assigned to the detail.

Overall, a ton of security spread out over several agencies. All in all, pretty fair (an importan point given the bashing the sheriff's get on these boards).

The AF SP's aren't the only Base Security. There are some SP's and also a civilian Security Force.

Otis is multi-jurisdictional if you will, with Air Force SF, MSP, Coast Guard Security and Army force protection augmentees on the edwards side of the house, there is contract security on the gates but thats it as far as the contract security goes, strictly on the gates, same is true for alot of stateside bases now, contractors on the gates so that it free's up more Airman to deploy in support of OIF/OEF

I know the last Air Show that I worked at Hanscomb that most of the Sheriff's I saw and talked to were volunteering their time....
That's obscene.

Why the hell would you volunteer to do a detail for free?

Re: Barnstable County Sheriffs at Otis?

BB,

That's truly bizarre. Why volunteer for the detail when you could go to the show and enjoy it off duty? Bizarre.

Anyway, someone is drudging up the two year old posts eh?

As far as the air show two years ago that I commented on, I can only comment on what I saw. Spending the entire day at the base I saw one Westfield guy at the entrance, one MSP marked unit inside, a bunch of Sheriff's, and a lot of Security Forces. There may have been more from each agency that I just didn't happen to run in to, who knows?

At this years show, although I really didn't get out of my seat, I don't recall seeing many Sheriff's or State Police, but a pretty good amount of Security Forces.

The only thing I can think of is they were being yahoos and thought it would be cool if some young chickies saw them in their neato Uniforms.

Re: Barnstable County Sheriffs at Otis?

I worked the airshow for the sheriffs department and was paid, and at the Westfield PD detail rate at that. Our department gets paid! I can see why everyone likes to bash those damn "honorary depties" that get a badge for making a donation but some of us are trained and are not yahoos with "neato" uniforms. I just chose to have another profession that pays a little better and has better hours, and I am still able to help out the community. I know it kills most guys on this board to think about that, but we are really here to help others not only ourselves.

Stay Safe!

My department got paid for the detail in Westfield AND we got to wear our 'neato' uniforms.

I 'drudged up' this post because I was new to the site and had information relevant to the post. It seems like many who post here have a chip on their shoulder....I wasn't trying to correct you. Is it me or does everyone seem very antagonistic on these boards?

And for the record, I hate the concept of the honorary deputy...just makes all deputies look bad, especially to those who don't recognize the distinction between honorary and reserve (i.e. trained) deputies.

Re: Barnstable County Sheriffs at Otis?

There is a private company now doing gate security, i think it's National Security. The only thing the Military Police do there now is inside work. ie. traffic stops. MSP also drives through once and a while. The trooper that is assigned to rt. 151/rt.28 also has Otis. As far as BCSO down there, no they are not assigned to it. Although the jail is there, the entrance and exit is BEFORE the gate, and I don't think BCSO Dep's would drive into the base. As far as the air show, all those guys were on detail.

Also, I think the Coast Guard may ave their security force down there too.

Barnstable County Sheriff traffic stop and arrest power

Do the Barnstable County deputies have chapter 90 rights? I see their fully equipped cruisers driving around all the time.
