If you happen to owe the state(unemployment) money, will this screw things up?

 

Yes, anything that shows you are some kind of deadbeat will destroy your chances to become a police officer.

 

if you have a payment plan set up with the state they might not make a big deal of it.

i made the mistake of taking unemployment one winter after being laid off and the Feds had just started charging taxes for it. seemed bizarre that i had no job , but somehow i was going to have to pay back the taxes on my unemployment benefits.

they screwed with me until i paid them back and then turned me over to the state and they got their pound of flesh too.

maybe the guy doing the background has been through the meat grinder with the tax man. in that case "he'll feel your pain"

Thanks for the info. I do have "connections" high up(in the doc) , so they may help smooth things over for me.
