ATTLEBORO - Police say a city couple broke into a vacant house under renovation on South Main Street to steal scrap metal to cash in for money.

But the couple, Scott L. Cronin, 45, and his girlfriend, Joyce Murray, 37, both of 517 South Main St. in Attleboro, denied any wrongdoing during arraignment Friday in Attleboro District Court.

They were both ordered held in jail on $500 cash bail after they pleaded innocent to larceny, breaking and entering and trespassing.

Prosecutor Jennifer Thompson said police responded to a vacant house at 153 South Main St. after police received a report of a man and a woman taking scrap metal and wire from the property Thursday afternoon.

An air conditioner and a metal basin were taken from the home and a witness told police a man was in the basement ripping aluminum molding off the wall. Murray's lawyer, Kerri Quintal of North Attleboro, said her client was arrested walking down the street and denied being at the house.

Cronin's lawyer, Paul Whelan of Attleboro, said Cronin took scrap metal out of a large trash container outside the house and placed it aside because he planned to ask the owner of the home if he could take it.

They were arrested by officers Robert McKearney and James Dufort, who were assisted by Officer John Hynes and Detective Richard Campion.

The suspects are due back in court Aug. 20 for a pretrial hearing.
