]STOW - A homeless man was arrested and subsequently sent to Worcester State Hospital for observation after breaking into a Pilot Grove apartment and later attempting suicide from his jail cell, police said.

Keelyn Kyrone Porter, 24, no known address, allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's apartment late in the evening on July 30 and stole a PlayStation 2.

"He broke the window and it looked like he was destructive within the apartment," said Stow Police Chief Joseph Rebello.

The break-in was likely a result of a bad break-up between Porter and the Pilot Grove resident, Rebello said.

"Apparently he felt stealing the PlayStation would be a way to get back at her," he said.

Rebello said the man had been described to him as a "street person" living in Framingham. On Aug. 2, police were searching for Porter in Framingham when they received a call that he was in the parking lot of Pilot Grove Apartments with three other men picking up a small motorized bike from his ex-girlfriend's residence, Rebello said.

He was arrested, processed and placed in a cell inside the Stow police station, but officers soon had to act again.

Through a television camera monitoring his jail cell, police noticed Porter acting suspiciously, Rebello said.

"An officer checked and found he had removed a drawstring from his shorts, threaded it through a vent and was hanging," Rebello said.

Officers rushed in, cut Porter down, performed First Aid and called an ambulance. He was conscious and talking when he was removed, Rebello said.

Porter was transported to Emerson Hospital where doctors treated him and performed a psychological evaluation, Rebello said. Emerson doctors released Porter but warned police he would likely attempt suicide again if he were brought back to his holding cell, Rebello said.

Stow Police contacted Middlesex County Sheriff James DiPaola, who agreed to hold Porter until his arraignment.

On Aug. 3, a judge ordered Porter to Worcester State Hospital for a 10-day observation, Rebello said. His charges include breaking and entering and larceny over $250.

"This is just one glaring example of how liability can come back at you," Rebello said, referring to the department's responsibility to care for and monitor its prisoners.

Last month, Bolton officials proposed a deal involving the transport of that community's prisoners to the Stow police station for a pre-determined fee, an initiative Rebello opposes.

He said Porter appeared friendly and articulate when being booked and didn't show any signs he wanted to commit suicide.

Rebello said all drawstrings will be removed from prisoners' garments in the future.
