HOPKINTON -
Police arrested and charged an Ashland woman Saturday for beating a 69-year-old Hopkinton man and preventing him from calling 911, police said.
Rhonda L. Manthe, 40, left the man with cuts and bruises after an argument turned physical at about 6:50 p.m., police Sgt. Joseph Bennett said.
Manthe was at the unnamed man's home on East Main Street when the attack began. The two are not related and she is not a caregiver, the sergeant said.
"When the victim tried to call the police, the suspect continued to assault him in an effort to prevent him from calling the police," Bennett said.
The altercation eventually ended, with Manthe leaving for her home at 157 Olive St. in Ashland, police said.
Hopkinton called for officers in Ashland to be on the lookout for Manthe. Police stopped Manthe on her street and alerted Hopkinton, which sent a sergeant to make the arrest at about 7:30 p.m., Bennett said.
The victim was treated at his home by firefighters, but declined to be taken to the hospital, Bennett said.
Manthe was charged with assault and battery on a person over 60 years old, with injury resulting, and witness intimidation, police said.
