Police last night were searching for two escaping armed robbers who fled on a Red Line train after knocking over a convenience story at gunpoint and abandoning their wrecked getaway car - and their clueless driver, nabbed near Andrew Station when a quick-thinking cop opened his unmarked car's door causing the bumbling bandit to run into it, police and witnesses said.
"When the driver got out of his car one of the detectives opened his door and hit him with the door. The guy ran right into it. That's what slowed him down," said MBTA bus driver James Sanders [stats], who watched the officer foil the getaway driver's attempted escape shortly before 9 p.m. "Just like in the movie '48 hours.'"
Officers quickly apprehended the driver, but his two accomplices escaped into Andrew Station and hopped a Quincy-bound Red Line train, then - recorded by surveillance video - got off at JFK station where they dumped some of the clothing they wore during the robbery and switched to an Ashmont Station-bound train, according to Boston Police Captain John Danilecki.
Boston police yesterday identified a bumbling getaway driver as a Mattapan teenager who now faces a slew of charges in connection with the robbery of a Southie convenience store Friday night.
Joe Fisher, 17, is charged with armed robbery while masked, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, operating a motor vehicle without being licensed, refusal to submit to a police officer, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with injuries.
About 9 p.m. Friday night, Fisher allegedly fled from cops with two accomplices after being spotted holding up the D Street Deli at gunpoint and sporting a ski mask.
