Authorities in Arkansas are conducting a massive manhunt after a police officer was fatally shot Monday in a small northeastern town.

The shooting was reported about 7:30 p.m. in Newport, about 90 miles northeast of Little Rock.

Lt. Patrick Weatherford, a 15-year department veteran, was shot in the line of duty and died shortly afterward at an area hospital.

Weatherford, 41, was a lieutenant in the criminal investigations division at the Newport police department. He studied criminal justice at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and attended the FBI National Academy, according to his Linkedin profile.
