An undercover Prince George's County police officer shot and killed one of three armed men who approached him last night in an apparent effort to take his car at the site of a narcotics enforcement operation, the county's acting police chief said.
The incident occurred about 8:50 p.m. in the 3200 block of Naylor Road in the Temple Hills area of the county, a few yards from the boundary between Prince George's and the District.
Acting Police Chief Roberto L. Hylton said two men who fled the scene of the shooting, were taken into custody later.
The officer, the slain man and the two other men were not identified last night.
Hylton said officers had gone to the Temple Hills location because of information that drugs were being sold there.
During the operation, Hylton said, an officer was returning to his car in the parking lot of a business when people he described as "three armed thugs" approached him.
One told the officer to "give it up," Hylton said. "We believe they tried to carjack our police officer."
He said the officer, believing his safety to be in jeopardy, opened fire. Hylton declined to say how many shots were fired.
Neighbors said they heard several.
The man who was hit died at the scene, police said.
Hylton said the other men fled on foot and then in an auto. They were later picked up by D.C. police, Hylton said.
He said a loaded handgun was found at the shooting scene. Also found, he said, was "some sort of grassy substance."
In speaking to reporters at the scene of the shooting, Hylton linked the drug trade to other illicit activity in Prince George's.
"Here's the drug culture driving crime and violence in Prince George's County again," he said.
