HELPING THE VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA

EMERGENCY ORDER ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL RESOURCES

Concerning Controls of Animals from Louisiana: September 22, 2005

By authority of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 129, Section 2, as of this date, and until further notice, no dogs or cats will be permitted entry into the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that have originated in Alabama, Louisiana, or Mississppi unless through mechanisms and processes approved by the Department of Agricultural Resources.

This order has been issued to help protect both the general public and also the animals in question. For the entire order you can click on to: www.Mass.gov/AGR

The Buddy Dog Humane Society joins the public in their concern for the people and pets affected by Hurricane Katrina. As displaced and endangered as many residents of the hurricane ravaged areas are, the primary concern for many, is the dogs and cats they had to leave behind.

Workers trained in disaster relief for animals are on the scene caring for displaced pets and making every effort to reunite pets with their owners. At this time, the assistance is most effectively being provided in areas located near the disaster sites.

The Massachusetts Bureau of Animal Health is assisting with pets finding refuge with their owners at Otis Air Force Base located on Cape Cod.

Due to the potential for public health risks, the Massachusetts Bureau of Animal Health has advised against receiving animals from the disaster areas until further notice. However the Bureau is aware that our organization, along with many others is ready to help when called upon.
