    Show will raise funds to purchase vest for Chelmsford police dog

    CHELMSFORD -- Axel's got drive. You can just see it when he passes by you in the police cruiser, sometimes growling with anticipation to sniff out a bad guy on the run.
    "He is just over the top when it comes to drive," said K-9 Officer Dave Leo.
    Leo and Axel, a high-strung black German shepherd, have been a crime-fighting team for the past three years. Leo said the job takes them to all the hot spots and can get pretty intense.
    A police dog can sometimes do the work of 10 officers when it comes to a search, said Leo, adding that the K-9 unit is often called to to the scene as backup.

    crime-fighting career more risky.
    A custom-made K-9 vest comes with a $735 price tag.
    Through grants and nonprofit organizations such as Vested Interest in K-9s Inc., pups like Axel are getting extra protection. Axel is one of 15 police dogs on a waiting list for help getting a vest, said Sandy Marcel, founder of Vested Interest.
