A 17-year-old newcomer to Amesbury started selling marijuana to users as young as 13 and had become a main supplier for students in middle school, police said after arresting him.
"The suspect was dealing three and four ounces a week, which in the school setting is a little worrisome," said police Sergeant William Scholtz, a former Drug Abuse Resistance Education officer who worked to keep youths off drugs.
"It's extremely disturbing to us as law enforcement, but also to the school and parents who have children within the school system."
Christian Lizarraga had a ledger of more than 50 students who owed him money, police said.
Police, who believe Lizarraga last lived in Texas, said they will continue to investigate the students on the list.
Lizarraga was arrested yesterday after a weeks-long undercover operation by police.
He was charged with two counts of distributing marijuana and distributing the drug within a school zone. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Newburyport District Court and was ordered held on $10,000 cash bail.
Police who searched his home with the assistance of a drug-sniffing dog, found drug packaging material and three ounces of marijuana with a street value of about $1,200, police said.
Scholtz said Lizarraga caught the attention of police in Amesbury in July, when he was living in the Stover's Court apartment complex, and neighbors complained of continuous traffic of youngsters going into his home. Police tracked Lizarraga when he moved to Highland Street.
