Altered Vehicle Height

3362 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  TheFuzz357
I know the law reads that a vehicle cannot alter the manufacturer's height by more than two inches (up or down) but at one time the Registrar had put out a list of vehicles (mostly 4x4's) that were allowed to go beyond the 2 inches. It listed the vehicles by manufacturer and by model with the exempted height changes. Does anyone have this list or know where to find it? I don't even know if the Registrar has kept this up to date or not.

The only list that I've seen is extremely out of date.
I would go to any inspection station and ask the inspector to see the thick training book that they have. It's in that for them. I want to say it's in one of the appendixes towards the front with all the rules they need to follow on doing a safety inspection.
Wheel base times wheel track divided by 2200 gives you the max hight the vehilce can be. measure from ground to bottom of rocker panel

wb X wt/ 2200

Speaking of inspection stations...... Am I wrong in thinking that a big fat red "R" on an inspection stickers needs to be fixed ASAP? Inspection stations in Attleboro are telling the recipients that they have 60 days for all failures (emissions and safety)???
Gil,
Yes it is true. A red R means safety defects must be repaired immediately. They do have 60 days however to get the vehicle re-inspected at no cost at the same service station. As far as what the stations say....it is not just in Attleboro. I hear it all the time up my way. I just have the owner/operator show me the inspection form which clearly states safety defects must be repaired immediately. You can cite them under c.90 s.20 - $25 fine. (Operating after Failed Safety Inspection).
That was me. The two young ladies who left it there decided to walk down onto 495 instead of the 100 yds back to the toll booth..... They got towed.
