SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - State police said they arrested a drunk driver who allegedly sped away from an accident that injured a father and his four-year-old son in Springfield.
State Police Lt. Thomas Daly told 22news it happened at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon on Noble Street in Springfield, near the entrance to I-91 North.
Lt Daly said the driver sped through a stop sign and broadsided the other car, and then took off. Police found him about an hour later on Birnie Avenue. Lt. Daly said the man registered twice the legal limit on an alcohol breathalyzer. He also did not have a license.
The driver identified himself as Able Gomez, but Lt. Daly believes that is an alias. "We do not believe the hit and run driver is here in this country legally. He has no license. He has no identification. There's no way to confirm his identity. This makes it very difficult to bring charges against him in court because we don't know who he is" said Lt. Daly.
The man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, drunk driving, and driving without a license. The man and his son inside the car were treated for non life-threatening injuries at Baystate Medical Center.
