I know this is unrelated to police work, but there a few ex-military types on this board, so maybe you can satisfy my curiousity. I was down in Newport over the weekend and came across two docked aircraft carriers side by side. They appeared to be decommissioned. One was actually listing noticeably. Any info on these? Future museums? Tourist attractions? Scrap? Artificial reefs? I could not locate anything on the internet. Thanks.

I believe one of them is the old training carrier they used to use in Pensacola. I believe that ship either was replaced by, or is the USS Forrestal of Damage Control Film fame. I remember reading when they were brought up about a deceade ago.

Hey!
Saratoga and Forrestal (CV59 & 60)

They were under SIMA (Ship Intermediate Maintainence Activity) Philadelphia last I knew. They are still on the U.S. Navy register in a reserve status. They can be reactivated or cannibalized for parts as necessary. They can also be stricken and sold to other countries, or "loaned" to museums who present viable proposals with economic and environmental impact studies.

Anybody remember that the battleship IOWA BB61 was there for a couple years too?

I got pictures but no scanner, sorry kids

Yeah, I heard a couple of swabbies talking about a Salve Regina girl back in the mid to late 80's. They made a shrine to her on their ship, right next to the sick call room where they used to get their weekly penacillin shots because of her. Same girl?

HC, I was waiting for someone to take the shot...

I've been to the aircraft graveyards out in AZ, pretty incredible. Military and commercial. The thing that amazed me the most was going past junkyards out there and seeing cars from the 30's with just surface rust on them....

I was there in Sept 98' when the Iowa arrived @ Newport. Shot some good photos too! Quite the sight. She's gone now but I forgot where. Somewhere out in California I think?

The Forrestal and the Saratoga. Thanks for the info! I wish they'd sink one as an artificial reef so I could go diving on it.

I heard the Oriskany is due to be sunk as a reef off I believe Florida. A few friends dove on the Saratoga in Bikini Islands three times. Great dives but deep, long trip and very expensive.... :fun:
