ACUSHNET - Police are investigating the recent theft of nearly 400 gallons of heating oil from the Acushnet Community Center.
Police Chief Michael Alves said the oil was siphoned from the two heating oil tanks located inside the center's basement. The value of the stolen heating oil was estimated at $1,500.
Chief Alves said an 8-foot wooden picnic table was also stolen.
The oil tanks were filled most recently in April. Members there realized the oil may have been stolen when the tanks were found to be empty while the furnace was being serviced.
Chief Alves said the theft is being investigated, but believes whoever siphoned the oil had to have used a large fuel truck.
"Four hundred gallons is not something you put into a small tank," he said. "If anyone saw a truck with a fuel tank in the back of the community center, they should call us."
