A civil liberties group has asked the Los Gatos Town Council to postpone making a decision on purchasing stun guns for its police department.

The American Civil Liberties Union's Northern California chapter said approval to buy 41 Taser X-26s should be delayed until after strong regulations are debated and approved.

The ACLU earlier this month issued a report raising questions about how the 50,000-volt weapon, touted as an alternative to deadly force, is typically being used by a rapidly growing number of law enforcement agencies.

``Without a publicly available draft policy, it is impossible to fully evaluate whether the stun guns will be sufficiently regulated,'' said Sanjeev Bery, the San Jose director of the ACLU of Northern California.

Monday night's town council meeting agenda did not include review and approval of Taser regulations and training. The council was being asked only to approve the weapons' purchase at a cost of about $41,200, including a $10,000 grant. No vote was taken before press time.
