HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut says state prison officials have begun force feeding an inmate who has been on a yearlong hunger strike.
Bill Coleman, a 48-year-old British citizen, is serving an 8-year sentence for rape. He maintains the charges were made up, and began his hunger strike in September 2007, when he weighed over 250 pounds, to protest what he considers a corrupt judicial system.
He now weighs about 150 pounds.
David McGuire, a lawyer with the ACLU, says Coleman had been taking fluids, but stopped about a week ago.
The Correction Department received a court order in January allowing it to force feed Coleman should it determine his health is in danger.
Brian Garnett, a department spokesman, says he cannot talk about any inmate's medical treatment.
