Ahh, I remember those short (7) weeks of days and weekend off!! Ohh, where have the good times gone... to hell I tell ya!!

A foot note: it can also be 8-4, depending on if the DOC runs 2, or 4 academies at the same time. In my case (in '98) it was 4 academies. 2 at Medfield, 7-3 & 8-4 as well as 2 @ Bridgewater, 7-3 & 8-4. That was their last big hiring of hundreds to fill a new prison.

Now there all held at Shirley. Rumor has it, they (DOC) will put through a big hiring of a 150 in a short time. So it can be 2 or better academies of either 7-3 or 8-4.

Who knows, every thing is subject to change in this uncertain world!

Back in the day('79) the academy was 6weeks,Mon- Fri and you stayed over those days and came home weekends. Of course we had bows and arrows in the towers then...
Those were heady times for the DOC when you started Cone.

I remember watching the news reports of the Walpole riot & Officer strike back in the mid-late 70's.

You had brass ones to join up during those times pal…

I just did the testing yesterday up at shirley. All that need to be done is the background and the drug screen/psych test results. Other than that am I unoffically all set for the most part?

They do 2 background checks? I thought the only way they would clear you for the PAT is if you successful passed the criminal background check. How many people took the PAT with you? I'm not scheduled to take it until 7/21/05

That was the preliminary check. For the PAT there was 30 I think and a few didn't make it. Afterwards we had our formal interviews, drug screen, psych tests, and met with the background investigator. IT's not as bad as it sounds.

They said I should get a letter in mid August that will say if I was selected. I'm just curious if I'm on the right track so far, especially since they were already fitting me for uniforms and gave me the academy booklet.

Channy, sounds like you are all set. You are on the right path. Good luck!

ProudA, it's only one back ground check. Sometimes it takes a while to complete. It starts when your finger printed and you fill out the paper work, for example, your past work history. When I went through the PAT, it wasn't until the back ground check was completed. At least that is how it was done back then.

With the CO shortage now, it wouldn't surprise me if they (DOC) did the back ground check while the PAT was being done. I can only guess on that.

PS: When you do get in, do your very best on every test. After the civil service test score, senority will depend on your test scores. A half a of point can mean you'll be behind or ahead of someone else through out your career / stay with the DOC. Everything from shift and days off to vacation picks.

When at my pre-screening and PT test the other day a DI said that they where going to hire about 150 and have 2 shifts 8-4 and 3-11. They said this to us as soon as we walked in the door and told anyone that had a problem with going to the academy 3-11 could just go then and stop wasting there time. I think 3-11 is great cause we all know unless your related to good old Mitt then your probaly working 2nd or 3rd shifts also I live on the south shore so it would only take me about 45 min. to get home, instead of the 2 hours it took after I left the Shirley last week.

Just a heads up to anyone going for the testing. Go as hard as you can on that PT test they will look at your scores and your grader might even be someone on the interview panel, like in my case and that insturctor remembered how many PU and SU I did hell I did more then I thought I would I felt it the next day but if a little pain gets you a good job then suck it up and drive on!!!! GOOD LUCK To Everyone Testing!!!!!!

Interview

A friend of mine received a card and completed the initial background/criminal check. However, when it came time for the PAT/Interview, he had difficulty obtaining a copy of his birth certificate. He has since obtained it, however, when he called down to Norfolk, they basically told him good luck next test. Anyone know if he can be deferred to the next PAT/Interview, instead of completely eliminating him from the process all together.?? Any help is appreciated.

Nope, it looks like he will have to pay the $75-. But did he go and take the PT test and formal interview? If so then he should have gotten the backround investagtors name and fax number and been able to fax it up to him, this is what I had to do because I was missing the contact number for my old 1st SGT. Well good luck!!!
