Criminal Charges Expected After Head-On Collision

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The investigation continued Sunday into a crash that killed two young people and critically injured another who were in a car fleeing a South Burlington police officer, police said.

There were seven people in the vehicle between the ages of 17 and 21 when the crash occurred about 2 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The vehicle was leaving what police believe was an underage drinking party, police said.
Criminal charges are expected, police said.

The fleeing vehicle collided head on with another car near Spear Street's intersection with Williston Road. Two occupants of the fleeing car were killed and another critically injured. All other occupants were treated for lesser injuries.

The car that was hit was driven by a 22-year-old South Burlington man, police said.

Four of the occupants of the fleeing car were from Burlington, and one from Colchester, Winooski and South Burlington, police said.

None of the names were released. Police said time was needed to give the families the opportunity to notify relatives. Police said more information would be released on Monday.

A South Burlington police officer was called to Pinnacle Drive at 1:55 a.m. Saturday after receiving a report of tires screeching, a crash and a steady horn sounding.

As police arrived, one vehicle started to leave the area. Police stopped the vehicle, but as Officer Matthew Plunkett approached, the car sped north on Spear Street.

The high-speed pursuit that followed lasted about two minutes.

The investigation is being conducted by the Burlington Police Department.
