Police: 20-Year-Old Driver May Have Been Under The Influence

INDIANAPOLIS -- A 15-year-old boy was killed and a 20-year-old critically injured after their car spun out of control during a street race on Indianapolis' southwest side, police said.

The crash happened just after 4 p.m. in the 3900 block of Foltz Road, said Sgt. Matthew Mount.

Witnesses said two cars were racing southbound on Foltz Road when one car crossed the center line in an attempt to pass the other. Instead, the driver of that car -- Mark Barron, 20 -- lost control of the vehicle and struck an oncoming pickup truck, Mount said.
Barron was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he was last listed in critical condition, Mount said. His front-seat passenger -- Devon Stone, 15 -- also suffered severe injuries and was transported to Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 8 p.m.

The two people in the pickup truck were treated at St. Francis South for minor injuries.

Police cited the 17-year-old driver of the vehicle Barron was attempting to pass at the time of the crash for his part in the street racing.

Investigators believe Barron may have been under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash, Mount said. Drug test results were pending Saturday night.
