Your "duty weapon" over the years?

Yes, every other month with our sidearm. Twice a year with the shotgun. Quarterly with the patrol rifle.

Last year we had 75 officer involved shootings so it's kinda important to know how to shoot.

That's a long service life for an automatic, especially considering how often you guys qualify, and also considering the armed forces had problems with cracked slides on their M-9's (military 92F). We get new pistols every 10 years by contract.

    S+W .357 with .38 +P+ ammo 1988-1991 (issued)
    Beretta 92F 9MM 1991-1999 (personal)
    S+W Sigma 9MM 1999-2001 (issued)
    Sig 228 9MM 2001-2004 (personal)
    S+W .38 snub airweight 2001-2004 (back-up)
    Glock 23 .40 2004 - present (issued)

I never liked the S+W .357 or the Sigma, all the others I have liked...
  5. Delta784 Acting Stupidly

Not liking a Sigma is a sign of good judgment. That first S&W ripoff of a Glock was junk, apparently the second ripoff of a Glock (M&P) is much better.

We had the 1st Sigmas, ripoff of Glock, and they were nothing but problems...junk IMHO!!
  7. mpd61 Federal Auxiliary Police

The first Gen Sigma's WERE junk. The E's were much better...Even so most people wouldn't even touch Sigma's now. Too bad cuz any of the Sigma E/VE's are bargains, either new or used. Quick spring kit and you've got a decent low cost pistol. It isn't a 4th Gen Glock or SigArms, but it's still a value.

    +1 http://gripforceproducts.com/

I use on on my G34, without it would have two groves of missing skin on my hand every time I trained.

    Bitch to install though.

Sorry, Crocks are dead to me just like the sigma series........ May I quote Sara Palin, " You can put lipstick on a pig but, It's still a pig."

Not to mention the high rate of failures as compaired to other weapons

The only other weapon I can think of that comes in second place for failures is the Baretta's with the locking block fractures

  10. sgthoskins Teufelhunden

Never had a Glock fail on me, but I don't shoot shit ammo so that may be the reason why.

I have had a Beretta 92fs lock up when the wing of the locking block cracked during training and it completely seized the weapon. I have no idea how the armorer fixed it.
  11. justanotherparatrooper Pissin' in liberals cheerio's for 40 years :)

For the amount of Glocks out there (one of the most popular pistols there is) Im not surprised that there are seemingly more failures.
  12. USMCMP5811 Administrator

Basically, you have to hammer the shit out of it with an armorer's hammer to get it to budge apart so you can replace the block. Total pain in the ass to do at times.

The other thing those 92-F's and 96-F's are known for is the safety/de-cocking lever breaking off.

I am a big fan of Glocks and have not had a failure yet. I had a few issues with the Sig 229. I qualified with a brand new sig right out of the box once that just about fell apart after about 30 rounds. The new one I was issued the same day fired one round and locked up.

I used to be a die-hard sig fan, and I refuse to part with my two-tone P220 and W. German P226 that I've had in the safe a number of years, and still love dearly. But unfortunately, the new sigs being manufactured nowadays aren't the same as the sigs of years past. From what I understand, parts are being outsourced and their quality has deteriorated exponentially, hence their recently acquired mediocre reputation from what used to be considered top of the line.

If you have an old sig (such as a W. German model), hang onto it. However, it's sad to say that I can't recommend their current products.....The Smith & Wesson M&P series is becoming the new top of the line, IMHO. And no, as simple and "reliable" as they are, I'm still not a glock fan.
  15. honor12900 MassCops Member

I have definitely observed the decline of the Sig. I also used to love it until I was issued the newer junk.
  16. Delta784 Acting Stupidly

    Anecdotal....I don't think anyone would argue that S&W makes the best revolvers, but this took me about .00005 seconds to find;

There is a Glock 17 that currently has over 1,000,000 (one million) rounds through it, and it's still going strong. Say what you want about Glocks, but durability is NOT an issue with them.

What's amusing/annoying about Glock haters is their pathological obsession to try to demean the weapon and those who like them. I'm content to acknowledge that SIG's, S&W, etc., are quality weapons, but I prefer a Glock, and I move on with my life.

I don't find it necessary to assign juvenile nicknames like "Glock Goober" or do searches on Google for pictures of extremely rare instances of where a SIG or S&W had a barrel explosion, and then try to pass that off as "evidence" to justify my very odd obsession with an inanimate object.

Most gun kabooms are caused by homebrew ammo. Most police kabooms are caused by bullet setback caused by rechambering the same bullet multiple times, like when clearing and reloading.
    All guns are equally susceptible.

Is it like crossing the streams or something if I have BOTH S&W's and a Glock?
  19. LawMan3 Moderator

Not at all. I have a couple sigs, a glock, and a S&W in my safe. All are good guns (well except my mosquito which was a cheap, impulse buy).
  20. mpd61 Federal Auxiliary Police

Delta and Hush are right. I am guilty of coining "glock goober" but it is only meant in Jest. As a lifelong firearms nut who must admit, ANY firearm can and has failed due to human, ammo, and mechanical failure/error. I don't prefer Glock at all, however, at my first MPTC Instructor school I shot a G23 slightly better than any other pistol there. I owned a nice G26 and used it on details. But it's gone now. I don't miss it.
I'm getting a nice German Sig P6 soon from a good guy in Quincy. Only one I'll ever have probably. Anyway...I firmly believe WHATEVER you carry, in WHATEVER caliber/platform, shoot the sumbitch as often as you possibly can, so you can hit WHATEVER you aim at consistently. Safe/secure carry coupled with safe/accurate deployment is the key. Be safe kids!

I absolutely swear by S&W revolvers, but except for the new M&P, you couldn't give me one of their prior automatic pistols.

Years ago I bought a S&W Model 39 9mm auto on a whim, and it was one of the worst guns I ever owned, it would jam consistently with any ammunition except factory FMJ. I sold it to a retired Illinois State Trooper who relocated to MA after retirement (wife was from MA), and I was honest with him about the problems I had with it. He didn't care and said he probably wouldn't even shoot it, he was issued the Model 39 by the ISP and just wanted to have one for old time's sake.

Truth. Zip them up with a revolver, a M&P, a Glock, I don't care, just zip them up.

While I don't sit back and spend the better part of the day googling pics of the allegid "RARE instances" of glocks blowing up because there are a ton of them out there, I compare my hatred for glock like I do for Ford. EVERY Glock I've shot, has caused me to loose skin. I've never had any luck with Ford and will refuse to buy another one. I'll stick to what I've had tried and true luck with be it a Chevy, Mopar, S&W, Sig, H&K, Cheesey pick up lines, Bud Light, stuffed chicken, and Mom's homemade apple pie. As I've said here in these forums to anyone looking to buy a gun, vehicle, etc.. Test drive a few and purchase what you feel comfortable with.

That's fine, but why don't you just acknowledge that Glocks are quality weapons, they're just not for you, and move on? There's no need to try to imply that Glocks aren't durable (they are) or not safe (they are).

I would be beyond shocked if any incident of a Glock blowing up was the result of using factory ammunition; if you (not you specifically, the proverbial you) hand-load hot ammunition that exceeds recommended pressures, then you accept the risks/consequences of doing that.

Glocks are an awesome weapon. I've had a G23 since 2006 and it has never had any issues. I also saw many contractors and some military carrying them in Afghanistan and they seem to hold up well with all the sand and dust....plus the 500 parts per million fecal matter in the air.
