MEDFORD (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) A woman gave birth in the parking lot of the Medford State Police Barracks after going into premature labor while sitting in traffic.
State Police officials say they received a 911 call around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday for a woman going into premature labor while stuck in gridlocked traffic on Route 16 westbound in Medford. Police say the source of the traffic was a service interruption to the traffic lights at Wellington Circle.
Three state troopers from the Medford barracks ran out into Route 16 to pull traffic out of the way as emergency personnel maintained contact with the car.
Once the vehicle pulled up to the barracks, the occupants informed the troopers that the baby was being born. They were directed to pull into the parking lot.
The troopers opened the back door to find that a baby girl had just been born. She was wrapped in blankets until an ambulance arrived.
Both mother and baby were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. They are reportedly in good condition.
