In my opinion there should be 1 academy curriculum statewide for FULL TIME Police Officers. There shouldn't be abbreviated (SSPO) academies if the end result is the Officer working as a FULL TIME Police Officer. State Police, Local Police and Campus Police (other full timers too such as Environmental PD etc) should all go to the same FULL TIME academy (22-26 weeks) run by seasoned Locals, Staties etc etc (I understand there could be several statewide due to travel etc). There shouldn't be a "state academy", "SSPO" and a "municipal academy" etc. The state of NH has a similar type of certification program (all full timers go to the same one). It puts to rest the "this academy is better than this one" nonsense. Any (or most) seasoned Officer will tell you that a Cop is judged more on their street performance versus their academy performance. The academy is a "basic" training (and neccessary). The real training (life or death stuff) occurs on the street. Ideally this state will adopt a similar training program in the future. It is good for a cadet to be cross trained by different types of FULL TIME seasoned police officers........
My academy was one of the first after the Tim Shepard death; http://www.odmp.org/officer/12139-officer-timothy-m-shepard I've never drank so much water in my life........we had to endure a half-hour speech by the then-new director of the MCJTC (now Judge Peter Agnes) in front of the media about all the changes that were implemented, before the academy officially started.
We had Munchkins (tm) after PT and one of the toughest parts of the day was lunch time. Union Sq. Somerville has some very nice restaurants and some lovely greasy spoons as well. Good food at good prices! Started watching that episode of "Campus Cops" posted much earlier. That SHOULD have been a better show. Cheesy. I can take a joke if it's funny, but that show was just, sad. There's stuff on the Disney Channel that's funnier...and those shows are some of the worst crap ever produced!
I got waived from SSPO and waived from a federal academy, but I can't find a job as a crossing guard in any municipality.
No matter what happens. Work hard, and take some fucking pride in your training... no matter what your school does or thinks of you when you graduate.
We had a recruit quit the first day several years back. DO NOT PUSS OUT! If you're reading this right after it's posted, you're a dope for not being in bed. If you read this after day ONE and are looking forward to day TWO, keep up the good work and make us all proud!
Just when I thought MA was screwed up...at my last job I started working in November and got sworn in the following August.
I wasn't too far behind you, and if you made a head call or were out of your seat, you had better have your water bottle with you. I used to clamp the squirt top between my teeth while I hung the hose.
Count on deck? I know one guy up there (full time path, not sspo). Fucker better not quit. If anyone reads this tonight, ill presume they quit. For thr first 3 weeks of my academy I only saw the internet on weekends, and I wasn't in West bumfuck mass. Posted while GL 90 § 13B
The Internet was science fiction when I was in the academy, but on the drive home each night, I got whatever I needed for the evening, and didn't leave my abode until the next morning when I went back to the academy. On the weekends, I'd buy a few cases (30-packs were also science fiction) of beer and invite some friends over. I was a hermit the entire 13 weeks (just to further date myself).
I'd like to hear how it was much easier than you thought, followed by how you didn't get any to-froms cause you were so gung ho on day one.
It wasn't easy for the guy that locked his backup key in his personal lockbox , which was battery powered PIN.... but never installed batteries. Yes that happened once.
