Filled out my pre employment application this afternoon in Norfolk. I was told that they'll be setting up interviews around the end of October / beginning of November. Possible start of academy in January. Good luck to those who are starting this month & to those who've signed up for the next one!
Hey Guys, I also just got back from filling out my pre-employment app at Norfolk. Does anyone know what the average pay is for a CO once you are assigned to a prison and work overtime/shift diff etc.? I know the FAQ's give a ballpark of 45-48k during the academy. I currently have an office job (which I hate), but I make 78K. I'm trying to figure out how much of a paycut I would be taking if I was offered and accepted the job.
You are allowed to work overtime immediately after you are assigned to a facility. If they tell you otherwise contact your union steward. A Base pay (Step 1) Correctional Officer has the potential to make $47-50k Guaranteed. This Range is including Roll Call Pay, Uniform allowance and educational attainment. Shift Differential will bump you up another $1600 (Based on 40 hrs a week). Starting in 2012 we will get back our Holiday pay which will bump you another $2300. If you cash out your 3 Personal days a year that's another $500. Then there's overtime which depending on the facility you go to can be plentiful or very little. So in the end a Step 1 CO could make an easy $50-55k before overtime. You could easily make $60k in your first year with just one overtime shift a month. You could with very little effort come very close to what you are currently making.
Thanks Lights-Out! This info will make my decision much easier now. I just have to convince my wife this is a good idea too. Best of luck to everyone starting the academy and to the rest of the upcoming recruits.
Well don't forget to mention a 20 year retirement. 20 yrs = 50% of your pay or 32 years = 80% of your pay. Also mention that you will be able to contribute to a 457b account (similar to a 401k). Also you and your wife will be eligible for tuition remission if either of you wishes to go back to school. Also you will have the opportunity to obtain a competitive scholarship through Boston University.
Wow, that's a good deal. Beats the hell out of my crappy 401k. Thanks again for taking the time to explain all these benefits. She gave me the green light, so now I just have to wait and see how the rest of this process plays out.
As I said last class, good luck tomorrow. Stay in your car until told to get out, and keep your mouth shut and eyes/ears open for the next 3 months and then some. Do well academically because your academy score is a tiebreaker for matching c/s scores. Have fun!!
filled out the pre-employment app today, said interviews first 2 weeks of novemeber and academy in wednesday hiring 200
Well as some as you may know and many will find out while reading this, the DOC has made a drastic move to increase staffing levels quickly, and to avoid overtime spending (mostly the latter, in my opinion). The Academy that started this past Monday, is now slotted for 6 weeks, instead of 12 weeks I do agree that staff can receive all of the pertinent academy training withing this new time limit, but this is a drastic move nonetheless. Curious as to all of your thoughts. Is 12 weeks too long?? Is 6 too short? I would go with 8 to be safe, but they don't pay me to think too hard.
I think 12 was a little long, anywhere from 8 to 10 weeks is good amount of time. Thats all you need to weed out the ones that dont want to take the job seriously. 309 must of been happy to hear that news!!!
I'm not and never have been a C/O, but 6 weeks seems kind of short for a job with such big responsibilities.
After just finishing a 12 week academy. My thought is that 8-10 weeks would probably be good. If everyone is squared away 6 might be ok but just seems like it might be rushed to fit everything in. Jmho Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
any updates? i received a notice from hr on sept 28 signed on the 6th, haven't heard anything as of yet... talked to a friend of mine and hes in the same boat except he got a call last week for an interview later this month
With the # of people they are looking to put into the next class it is going to take them awhile to call everyone. Just relax and stay patient. Peace Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Eyeballs, Is this actually confirmed info? I have heard everything ranging from 6 to 10 weeks from COs all the way up to Captains....with no definite answer... Just curious when we can expect them to hit the Institutions. If it is only 6 weeks, I wonder if they will do OJT still? If so they should be around in just a couple of weeks...considering Oct. 31 is the start of week 4.....
As of right now the recruits are planning on graduating Thanksgiving week. Not sure if Wed before turkey day or Friday. The academy is 7 weeks total, with 5 weeks in the institution after grad for a Field training preparedness program, then they go back to the Academy for 1 week for assessment in Jan. Then....they go back to their camps for the formal Field Training Program. January's class is supposed to be 200 with 6 weeks, and the last class in shirley, as the training academy is moving to milford( or medfield, or new braintree ,they don't know) but it will be moving. So to answer your question, you'll see them online the first full week of Dec, as they have to go to one weeks institution orientation-the same week the new Sgt. start.
Who makes this stuff up? Work on line, to prep for the FTO program? Either way, Its good to see new classes coming down the line! Are they giving the academy building back to the "minimum"?
im trying to be as patient as possible, but it'd be nice to hear something because i really want to give my boss a proper heads up but dont want to to blow the whistle too soon. still haven't heard a thing, when i went to hr at the beginning of the month they said that the pt test would be either the last week of oct or 1st week of nov... id imagine that i would have heard something by now...
You do realize that you are dealing with the state? The dates they tell you are subject to change. Kinda like the military, hurry up and wait. Just keep getting in shape and be ready for it when the time comes. Patience is a highly undervalued skill. Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
