Egyptian protesters scale US Embassy wall in Cairo and tear down American flag, while Libyans attack US consulate

Mainly ultraconservative protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Egypt's capital Tuesday and brought down the American flag, replacing it with a black Islamist flag to protest a U.S.-produced film attacking the Prophet Muhammad. Hours later, armed men in eastern Libya also stormed the U.S. consulate there and set it on fire as anger spread.
It was the first time ever that the U.S. Embassy in Cairo has been breached and comes as Egypt is struggling to overcome months of unrest following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak's autocratic regime. U.S. officials said no Americans were reported harmed in the assaults in Cairo or the eastern city of Benghazi.
The unrest in Cairo began when hundreds of protesters marched to the downtown embassy, gathering outside its walls and chanting against the movie and the U.S.

Gunmen attack US consulate in Libya

    Published September 11, 2012

An armed group of protesters clashed with Libyan security forces Tuesday at the U.S. consulate office in Benghazi, a security official told Reuters, over a film that reportedly insults Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.
"One American staff member has died and a number have been
injured in the clashes,'' Abdel-Monem Al-Hurr, a spokesman for
Libya's Supreme Security Committee, told Reuters.
The film, which was produced in the U.S., according to the Associated Press, spurred a similar incident in Egypt at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, where protesters climbed the building and tore down an American flag.
"The U.S. consulate's security guards inside the building fired at the militia as it was trying to enter and attack it," Al-Hurr said.
Witnesses told the Associated Press the consulate was set on fire and most of it was burned.

Shut off all money to Egypt. Maybe NBC will ask why no one fired on the protesters when they jumped the wall and burned our flag. Nothing to see here move along. Obama said George Bush should've built taller walls when he was asked for a comment.

The Libs will applaud our restraint, I agree with Q5 and Top-if they (Egyptians/Libyans) care so much about the Prophet, let's let the USMC arrange a face to face for them...almost looked like Iran in '79, where we had a weak President who allowed his embassy to be taken...only good that came out of that mess was Dutch Reagan! Vote for hope and change, let's hope we change Presidents in November...No US Embassy should be violated without a harsh response from us, and NO Mr President, raising your voice dosn't count...

TRIPOLI, Libya — The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three American members of his staff were killed in the attack on the U.S. consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi by protesters angry over a film that ridiculed Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, Libyan officials said Wednesday.
They said Ambassador Chris Stevens was killed Tuesday night when he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff as the building came under attack by a mob guns and rocket propelled grenades.
The three Libyan officials who confirmed the deaths were deputy interior minister for eastern Libya Wanis al-Sharaf; Benghazi security chief Abdel-Basit Haroun; and Benghazi city council and security official Ahmed Bousinia.
The State Department said Tuesday that one American was killed in the attack. It has not confirmed the other deaths.
The attack on the Benghazi consulate took place as hundreds of protesters in neighboring Egypt scaled the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and tore down and replaced the American flag with a black Islamic banner.

Romney criticizes Obama’s response to Middle East violence

Mitt Romney sharply criticized President Barack Obama's response to attacks on the United States Embassy in Egypt and the U.S. Consulate in Libya, accusing him of sympathizing with those who carried out the attacks.
"I'm outraged by the attacks on American diplomatic missions in Libya and Egypt and by the death of an American consulate worker in Benghazi," Romney said in a statement issued to reporters late Tuesday. "It's disgraceful that the Obama Administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions, but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks."
Romney was referring to a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Cairo that apologized for an obscure anti-Muslim film being distributed by an Israeli-American real estate developer that prompted the protests Tuesday.
An unnamed Obama administration official later disavowed that apology to Politico's Byron Tau, saying it "does not reflect the views of the U.S. government."

White House Confirms Death of US Ambassador to Libya, 3 Other Americans
The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other American staff members were killed Tuesday in an attack on the U.S. consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi, the White House confirmed. President Obama, in a written statement issued Wednesday morning, called the attack "outrageous" and "senseless."

Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens was killed Tuesday night when he and a group of embassy employees went to the consulate to try to evacuate staff. The protesters, angry over a film that ridiculed Islam's Prophet Muhammad, were firing gunshots and rocket propelled grenades. All of the other officials -- three in all -- hold senior security positions in Benghazi.

The supposed Whit House statement .... "Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others" Laughable and disgusting on so many levels. Free religious speech? Not if your Catholic or Christian you don't. Don't you dare display the Cross, Nativity, Santa Claus etc.
This Predisident is spineless. I hope that Romney turns out to be at least half the man Reagon was, that'd be enough for me.
Time to pull every... EVERY single American out of the middle east... troops, politicians, visitors, all of em. Along with every American dollar out with them. Never send another penny, period. And just leave all these radical idiots to victimize each other. To hell with em.....

The problem here is that IF we start a war with these shitstains it will guarantee a second term for Obama. Americans never switch leadership mid war and this may be the Dems ace in the hole. Hopefully they can at least conjure up a State Dept. spokesman that doesn't say, "Uh, Uh, Uh" every other word...

For now they'll spew their libtard crap to appease their base but they're planning. They'll allow this situation to spiral out of control instead of immediately stomping it out as topcop and Q5 rightly suggested. Then they'll send in our outnumbered troops once its a Somalia-like situation and you know the rest...
I pray this doesn't happen but I will not be surprised.

I thought a contingent of Marines was assigned to each Embassy around the world. Where were they when this stuff was brewing?
  15. LGriffin Verified Mother Führer...

The administration and the news rarely report the facts. I'll bet the two unidentified deceased were Marines. With regard to military presence, I wasn't aware that Operation Odyssey ended but it doesn't look like the locals appreciated it.

Fortunately, Romney just delivered another strong, Reaganesque statement.
  16. LGriffin Verified Mother Führer...

Obama just delivered a speech from the rose garden. His tone has changed and he promises that "Justice will be done." Prepare yourselves for his second term...

Nope, I refuse to believe that the American voters are going to reward this prick for supporting The Muslim Brotherhood with weapons and troops. This reminds me of 1979 for Jiimmy Asshole Carter.

I am very hopeful that this will compel people to vote for Romney. Not here in our state, but around the country where it matters.

    Hang in there, LGriffin!

I don't see obama reacting too strongly as far as taking action. Harsh words to make it look like he means it is all I expect from the White House. He and hillary were quite clear that it was a "small group of savages" and that Libya's people are government are not responsible. So they'll spend a month or so seeking out the individuals involved and then right before the election find them and "bring them to justice." Which I'm guessing will be a stern talking to followed by a hug and an apology for hurting their feelings.

While every embassy has a contigent of US Marines, DSS agents and security guards to help protect them, essentially we depend on the host nation to secure embassies, as the security elements are usually quite small. Certainly not large enough to stop thousands of people from storming it.

What I want to know is why we aren't carpet-bombing Libya right now?
