would nh police departments recognize a lateral transfer from nypd? Or would an individual have to go through the academy again?
It's not. It is the full length of the academy, but it is not residential. You only have to be there for the blocks of instruction relating to New Hampshire law. In other words, no firearms, PT, EVOC, drill and ceremony, defensive tactics, etc. Just classroom stuff.
This is from the NH academy FAQ website, hope it helps. I am a certified out-of-state officer. Can I be hired in New Hampshire without going through the entire Academy? If you are currently serving as a certified, academy-trained, full-time police officer in another state, you may be eligible to have some subjects waived in our Academy and only attend about 100 hours of commuter “New Hampshire Law Package” training, and pass tests on these modules. You still must meet all the pre-hiring and background investigation requirements, pass the medical and psychological exams and the physical fitness test. You will also be required to pass the on-going physical fitness test every 3 years to maintain your New Hampshire certification. We are reciprocal with all other states in the US and recognize their training if it is at least equal in scope to ours. Any classes you did not have in your state of origin, you may be required to take in our Academy. If your First Aid/CPR certificate has expired, this training will also be required. If our analysis of your out-of-state training requires you to take the equivalent of 30% of our total Academy hours, you will be required to attend our entire Academy. NOTE: The Corrections Academy is not reciprocal with any other state, and you must take the entire 8-week course here, if you move in from another state. Also some New Hampshire police departments, as a matter of their own policy, will require you to complete the entire New Hampshire Police Academy.
First thing you would have to do is put on a Red Sox shirt, go to Fenway and swear your allegiance to The Nation, then we will think about letting you transfer!!
I think Hookset PD (or near there) just hired some NYPD guys earlier this year and they were only required to take the PSTC "Law Package" training. This is not the full 12 week (soon to be 14 week) Academy but specific classes that relate to NH MV, domestic violence, etc stuff. It is not live-in but campus style.
You sit in whatever law classes the recruit class is taking... in civilian clothes and then every fri you take a test or tests with whoever else is taking the law package. Unfortunately you have to sit through the retarded questions heard once already when you went to your first academy...lol In my case I was already off field training by the time I took the law package and a lot of it was OT. Also its not everyday, it could be twice a week or three days a week or one, it all depends on how the academy is set up for that class. They do take NYPD academy no problem, just have the NY academy mail NHPTS your transcripts when your department needs them. You also can have one sent to yourself , it won't be official but it will help In case someone loses the original that gets sent out. All it takes is a phone call too, but it helps getting it before you leave. To all you NYPD guys.... research the departments well before making a decision, a lot of them aren't the best fit for a guy from NYPD, unless of course you worked in Manhattan lower than 125th St or you worked in Queens....lol But there are good departments here especially on the border of MA.
