$5M paid to buy freedom for rights workers held in Egypt

      AP
Feb. 26: Egyptian policemen sit in front of Egyptian employees of several pro-democracy groups charged with using foreign funds to foment unrest during their trial in Cairo, Egypt.
CAIRO – Seven American rights workers are on a plane out of Egypt after the U.S. paid nearly $5 million in bail costs to secure their freedom.
Egyptian officials said the U.S. paid $300,000 each for 16 Americans, nine of whom were already out of the country.
The State Department said the money was paid by the nongovernmental organizations where the democracy and rights workers work. However, the NGOs receive U.S. funding for their operations.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said workers from other international organizations were also on the plane. They were Norwegian, Serbian, Palestinian and German.

McCain calls for air strikes against Syria's Assad

Sen. John McCain on Monday became the first U.S. lawmaker to call for air strikes against the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad, putting the influential Arizona Republican in front of the Obama administration in calling for American troop involvement in the year-long struggle between the dictator and Syrian citizens.
"The time has come for a new policy," McCain said in a Senate floor speech Monday afternoon in which he compared Syrian violence to war crimes in the Balkans and Russia's annihilation of Grozny in Chechnya.

BEIRUT – Syria's main opposition group says 1,000 people have been killed by government forces in the last eight days.
A spokeswoman for the Syrian National Council says troops loyal to President Bashar Assad have intensified their onslaught in opposition areas despite saying it would accept a U.N. peace plan.
SNC spokeswoman Bassma Kodmani says 160 people were killed in Syria on Monday alone.
Kodmani told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday that regime forces have used heavy weapons including anti-aircraft guns against civilians in apparent defiance of an agreement to begin a cease-fire April 10.

Syria: Turkey May Invoke NATO's Protection - Erdogan
    April 11, 2012 | 1830 GMT

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on April 11 suggested invoking NATO's fifth article to protect Turkey's border against Syrian incursions, Today's Zaman reported. The fifth article states that an attack on any NATO member is considered an attack on all members. Speaking during his visit to China, Erdogan said Turkey is facing increasing tensions along the border and that NATO has a responsibility to protect it.

  20. Delta784 Acting Stupidly

As much as I hate to say it, he's right. The United States invoked Article V of the NATO charter after 9/11, which led to the multinational coalitions in Iraq & Afghanistan. We should limit our support to air power only, IMO.....no boots on the ground.

The Obama administration must have already seen this as a possible outcome. I am curious what behind the scenes stuff is going on now.
