    Hello,

I am a french-canadian from Montreal currently studying in Boston. I have a car and I am planning on keeping it since I want to be able to travel back and forth to QC to see family/girlfriend etc...

I basically have a Quebec driver's license and a Quebec plate. I am currently trying to figure out if I am going to be completely legal but nobody seems to be able to answer me. I will be crossing the border at least once a month (I think my license is suppose to be valid for a year restarting every time I cross) and my driver license is suppose to be good in the states. Since I am a student, do I become a US resident??? Canadian don't even have a VISA to be studying here so nothing seems to be clearly define regarding those kind of cases.

In brief: I am a student in the US who will be crossing the border often. I want to keep my QC driver license and plate, is that going to be any problem? You understand if I change for a Massachusetts one I basically get the same problem but in Canada! I'm stuck...

    Thank you for your help.
    Ben

Ya, it's a good idea to buy private insurance on top of the coverage provided by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec, as car accidents outside Quebec are dealt with fairly differently than inside Quebec (generally, you can't sue for an auto accident injury in Quebec)

    From the SAAQ website...
Unlike in Ma or Ontario, you don't go to a private insurance company for your liability portion of your vehicle insurance...

In other Canadian provinces such as Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia, vehicle liability insurance can only be purchased from the provincial government as in Quebec..

Oddly enough the SAAQ has it's own uniformed sworn law enforcement officers to enforce commercial vehicle safety laws...

What I meant to say is that in Quebec, BC, Manitoba and Sask., you don't buy your PRIMARY liability insurance from an private insurance company, but instead your buy it from government agency(although many private broker sell it on behalf of the gov); any collision or secondary/extra liability is purchased through a private insurer...

Darn. I thought it was a cupholder so you could leave your coffee on the roof and not have it fly off as soon as you take the first turn out of the parking lot at the beginning of your shift.

Not sure how old those arrow sticks are, but I know those large arrow sticks are common on SQ and SAAQ patrol cars and Quebec Ministry of Transportation vehicles...

    Thanks for all your answers,

So looks like my student permit doesn't affect my driver's license or plate. For my insurance I think my company can only cover me for 180 days per year. Does anybody know if a US insurance company could cover a foreign plate?

check your mph and slow the fuck down, we don't care if "your car only has kilometers"...
  22. EnforceOfficer New Member

LOL...All cars sold in Canada have MPH in small print beside the kilometres...
