    Default Bilingual?

    Hey All,

I'm trying to become a police officer. I've been doing just about everything I can to make myself as attractive a candidate as I can (graduated w/ bachelors in CJ, been taking every test that comes along, starting an EMT course in a few months, etc.) and I've heard that being bilingual can be a HUGE advantage. I took four years of Spanish in high school and enjoyed it. While it has been awhile since I've used it, I still remember plenty. Are there any good (pronounced: "cheap") language programs that people can recommend? I've been poking around on the internet and there is a TON of information - I was hoping some people on this board had some first hand experience.

Anyway, thanks for the help and to all the LEO's thanks for doing your jobs.

In an ideal situation, an American police officer should only need to speak 1 language, that being English. A lot of today's immigrants (legal and illegal) refuse to learn the language of the greatest country in history (USA). It's unfortunate that others (IE the police) need to learn another language to accommodate those who move here. It should be the other way around right? It irks me when you see a hiring requirement such as "must speak Spanish and English" when applying for a public service job in the USA! When I lived in CA I recall the Santa Ana PD having such a requirement. How about making it mandatory to learn English if you want to come here and make a living (Didn't the Italians etc have to learn the language a century ago?).

With a name like "huskycj" I doubt you're attractive at all....

I recommend a real simple and easy course of action. Enlist in the Army, and tell em you want to go directly into Special Forces. They have a kick ass language school out in sunny Cal. It's wicked easy getting in AND you get to check off the 'Veteran' box. Now, once you get notified you're going SF, just let them know you want 7th SFG(A). They work south of the border and you'll really hone those Spanish lessons..

    Good luck amigo

To bad 7 just heard the word bi. It was awkward trying to explain to him that I don't swing that way without hurting his feelings. Poor guy, at his age and still a virgin.

    +1

I only took a second language in high school and college because I had to, but it certainly came in handy on the job. It's good to know what the little bastards are plotting in their native tongue.

I took 4 years of Spanish in high school, as well as 2 semesters in college, I too am hoping that it will help to give me an advantage on my resume.

It's tough though if you don't speak it regularly or have a chance to practice it you can forget some stuff pretty quickly.
