E-mail article View text version</FONT> View most popular</FONT>An MCI-Cedar Junction inmate apparently killed himself, and another three attempted suicide, all in the segregation unit of the maximum security prison, Department of Correction officials said.
Nelson Rodriguez, 26, who was serving a four-year sentence for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, was found hanging in a cell at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday and was pronounced dead soon after, said Diane Wiffin, DOC spokeswoman.
Rodriguez, who was sent to the segregation unit after he allegedly assaulted DOC staff, was the fourth inmate to kill himself in a state facility this year, Wiffin said.
Another inmate in the same segregation unit attempted to hang himself, and two others attempted to slice themselves. All three of those suicide attempts were unsuccessful, Wiffin said.
“One inmate is being housed in the Health Services Unit at MCI-Cedar Junction and has been seen by mental health staff,” Wiffin said. “Two inmates are being treated at outside hospitals.
It was unclear how the inmates were able to obtain the implements used in the suicide bids.
The bloodshed at MCI-Cedar Junction comes weeks after the prison failed an audit by the American Correctional Association.Wiffin said the prison failed because of “deficiencies in its standards around tools, caustic/toxic (materials) and unprofessional staff members.”
“This is a rigorous process that requires a facility meet 63 mandatory standards and 90 percent of 469 nonmandatory standards,” Wiffin said. “MCI-Cedar Junction is developing action plans to come into compliance with standards.”

"unprofessional staff members". This is a real slap in the face. But I am not surprised.JGH

Seems like it's the way of the world these days JGH.
It's not the victim we have sympathy for, its the criminal. Its inexplicable how
standards have changed so dramatically and for the worse over the last 20 years.
And you guys behind the wall are big targets for the "rehabilitationists", especially in this state..

I guarantee those that pity the cons have never been a victim of a violent crime.

Hello,
Brand new here. I found you all researching a topic for a friend of mine. I gotta say, though, Mr. Kozmo, you are absolutely wrong. I was a victim of a violent and forcible homosexual rape as a child perpetrated by a catholic priest... and my friend is in the DDU, Walpole. Name of Joseph Druce. I DO have pity on him as he was also raped by a catholic seminarian (priest in training) as a child. And, I gotta say this- he is no nazi, homophobe, or a psychopath. He has a well developed conscience, and a sense of concern for my financial wellbeing vis-a-vis my phone bill. This person, (and I,) know what happened with the Gheogan killing. Did you all know the music that was turned way up the day the pedo-priest met his fate was "Godsmack?" Also, that there was only one officer on the tier? (violation of policy) Also, that many the cell doors were open simultaneously? (violation of policy) I have a laundry list of incriminating stuff, all the way up here in Alaska (and for the record, it has been disseminated.) Conte has withheld documents during the pendancy of motions. Docs that had a direct bearing on the motions.... The Dennehy commission and Delaney probe were a whitewash. MCI- CJ is apparently (and documentedly now) awash in corruption.
Ghoegan was set up. That is all there is to it. The officers had more than one advance warning and ignored them. (documented)
Brouillette was on scene and coached the CO's within an hour or so, and before the investigators arrived to take interviews. All their testimony is now suspect. (he is now no longer in the union...) Lonerghan possibly was aware of the intrusion into J1 cell 2. (22 feet from control)
Look guys, this has gone on long enough.
Too many people know the truth, it is out here. ALL OF IT.
Joe has been tortured, denied medical care, and worse. We know it, you know it, and we have the docs, along with LaChance. The gig is up. Push to close down the DDU. It is a sensory deprivation unit, and that inevitably will be held to be cruel and inhuman. It is psychological torture. Once it has been held so, ill the excuse, "I was just following orders," hold any water? Ask the Nuremburgh defendants...
Please take no reprisals against Joe. It could do no good. The docs and the truth are out here. Supermax is inhuman, and the world is about to have a very close look at what it breeds. A new site is about to go up (actually, several) about Josephs torture, and the nature of supermax itself, across the USA. It is outdated, archaic, brutal, and has been held internationally to amount to torture. No wonder they all want to kill themselves, starve themselves, mutilate themselves.

How do you guys that work the DDU look yourselves in the mirror in the morning?

Don't you remember that Joe was raped as a little kid?
He only killed people that were attempting to give him (or further children) another taste of it. I do not blame him for that. Were it not for the grace of God, there go I.

They are human beings, not animals.

So, Kozmo, you are wrong. I am a victim of a violent crime. Forcible rape of a child. I have testified before a House Judiciary committee, and have to again in January this year regarding this horrible subject. I bear lifelong effects from it. AND- I do have pity for Joe- in fact, he is a beloved friend. I love Joe.
To all the staff working DDU, MCI-CJ... lay off Joe. All this is known to many, many people- including his lawyer. And a hell of a lot more... more than you want to know.

Thanks for listening,
Christopher D. Kodger

Never been to prison. Been in local lockups a few times, no big deal, no violence. And I would agree with both of you that while most of those guys can't be out on the street, my beef is only with "supermax." I mean, if I treated a dog that way, one of you guys (or gals) would have to come arrest me. And what about these guys when they get out? I see it as psychological torture, but I blame the bureaucracy and the politicians for selling the idea to the people, certainly not the CO's. If we can torture prisoners in the home of the free, then we can do it to anyone else, and as we see in the news, it is happening. This gives the US a real black eye, IMO. I guess I disagree with the idea of permanent lockdown.
Life in prison, fine. Even the death penalty- no problem here- if they are in fact guilty. Ten years in solitary- no way. But, I am just a joe civilian, so what does my opinion matter... I'm saying that I think it was better when they had only alcatraz set up this way, and then shut it down. I wish Marion had never happened. Just another asshole's opinion.

Here's the problem my friend, 10 Block and DDU aren't set up to punish for the sake of punishing, their set up to house the worst of the worst offenders, those who do not play well with others. So, what do you do when you have a Joe Druce in with a weaker inmate(your example exactly), do you let the stronger inmate continually prey on others or do you classify them by offender? You can't have your cake and eat it too! Some animals sholdn't be let out of their cages!
Problem with what I just said, well consider this? What kind of human being are you if we have to lock you in a cage 23 hrs a day because you can't play well with others?
Consider telling you prisoner rights theory to the poor woman who was raped in front of her 2 yr old for 24 hrs. Oh by the way he's supposedly HIV positive. How would you fell Mr. prisoner's rights if that was your wife or daughter or, God forbid, your son in that room? Would you want that piece of shit in DDU or out walking about the institution having a grand old time.
I'm sorry what happened to you, but your bitch is with the archdiocess, not DOC.
I say hand out more razor blades and ropes and let the problems take care of themselves.
Signed - a concernd citizen

AMEN. You can't treat me like this, your violating my rights. I'm tired of hearing this. What about the poor victims rights? I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you and Mr. Druce, but there are many others who have been in that situation and have learned to deal with it and have gone on to live productive lives. I'm tired of people using there bad experiences as a crutch or an excuse as to why they did something. Time to stand up, be a man and except responsibility for what you have done. As the old saying goes, "If you can't do the time, Don't do the crime."

This site is a pro-police discussion forum intended for sworn police officers and civilian law enforcement officials as well as those interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement here in Massachusetts. Not for someone who has been in lockup a few times and feels that they are some kind of advocate against super-max prisons. The site is not an open forum for prisoner rights. I personally believe that once convicted prisoners have no rights what so ever!

Please take the "born again" he's not a bad guy speech elsewhere. Your postings on this subject are not welcome on this forum. You are not going to change the prison system or this boards members feelings on the subject due to the fact that we tend to be a little bias on the topic.

Welcome to prison you POS. Here's your standard issue: Pillow, blanket, shirts, pants, and official DOC noose.

They wanna hang themselves? let them. It would be cheaper on the taxes.

I know, it's a little cold. But nobody put them in prison, their own actions put them in there. And many are animals. These guys were in segregation for a reason and it wasn't because they were selling AVON.
