I just finished E911 training in Agawam...I was wondering if any of your departments currently use the new 911 system? I believe it is called Vesta Palace (not sure if this is the right name or spelling...sorry)

it's not a where it's the new 911 system that we were told about in class. The instructor said that all departments would have to be using them within the next year and just wondered if anyone was using it now.

SETB, in their infinate wisdom, started with the largest departments and MSP... that way, when it failed, it failed big time in boston, and fall river, rather than cowtown's you've never heard of...

I STILL havent gotten a phase-2 tracable call transfer from MSP... Im wondering if it actualy works, or only works in theory..... "Im in your town, but I dont know where. Im wraped around a tree"

Anyways...
Did you go to a "new 911" class, or the old 911 class, which implements mapping?

The "new" 911 is two computer screens, a QWERTY keyboard, a custom keyboard, and a handset. The converted is the old Plantronics console With ALI / ANI screens, recorder on top, keyboard slides under, and they add one flatpannel to it to do the phase-2 mapping. I dont know of any towns that have been converted to the console + lcd, I dont see why they would bother doing so since they're working on getting all PSAP's into the newest 2-lcd model.... (But im sure there have been some switched, i just dont know who)

Yes, the software is VestaPalace by Plantronics... but i cant seem to find it on their website anymore???

The new 911 equipment was installed in several departments. Short version of story. Women in Hopkington is having an athsma attack can't talk, dial 911 new system does not display any ani or ali data, women dies. SETB has suspended installing new equipment until the glitch is fixed.

I thought they have resumed instalation??

I do not think they have started suing the system again, or started instalation. One of my departments has the new system and the other department does not at this time and we do not know when it will be instaled.

They may have, The incident that happened was last spring, I would hope that they have the problem squared away by now.

I went to the old class. Next to the "old" system was the "new" system.

Did any of you take the APCO course? Heard lots about it during my class and was curious to know how many smaller departments send their dispatchers.

Badgebunny, are you a new hire from Springfield?

APCO containts a lot of BS, in my opinion.
They teach some great things like how to take control of a call, and some things to do durring a call, as well as managing your own problems...
But, like anything, most of it goes out the window the minute you sit behind the console...., and infact some of what they suggest is not allowed in Massachusetts... I learned more durring my first hour on the desk than in their 40 hour class

I say suggest like that becasue APCO is a private organization, not any gvt. entity..., and what they say will never take priority over laws and your department's policy and procedure.

I'de like to add I am looking foward to taking some of their "add on;s", like suicide callers, and whatnot. I just think their Basic course trys to drive things into your mind thinking of only one thing: liablity. Seems like they had more lawyers than dispatchers writing that program...

Posted by: badgebunny

No, not from Springfield. Did you get EMD training at APCO or is that an add on class?

Posted by: Curious EMT

EMD is a seperate 24 hr class. We use APCO's, there are others, including PowerPhone, and a few electronic computer-based ones as well....

Posted by: FRPDConstable

We use APCO and EMD and all that happy stuff. I think i memorized the cards well no really but it feels like that.. NO new 911 yet that is still on hold and i went to the new training last year.. Like i remember it.. More Overtime i guess

I'm in Illinois, but we started using Vesta in August when we moved into our new facility. Simply phenominal and we love it. Of course there were glitches for the few weeks, but it's fine now. The mapping is a separate problem, we are getting cell tower locations and landline caller locations plotting most of the time. Phase II has been ordered but is not working yet.

APCO is a great orginization. And one of only two orginizations that exist to represent us not only on a local level, but also a statewide and federal level. I've attended several classes over the years, and I have very few complaints. NENA would be the other organization. Both speak to and work with local, state and federal representives on our behalf. They work with Congress almost constantly.

Additionally, the topics and material they teach are not designed to superceed existing laws or policies. They are designed to improve what is already there. And what you use from those classes behind the console id up to you. Letting it be forgotten is a choice, not a forgone conclusion.

Before leaving my old job, I worked with the new system for several months. While I cannot really say much about the technical difficulties they have had, I do have to say that as far as ease of use goes the vesta system is a good system, it improved the working conditions immensely.

Posted by: 10-3please

Im not sure if this is what you are talking about, but in GA, we have been told that NCIC is about to go thru some type of change. Its supposed to began in Jan. '06

Posted by: 10-3please

Our mapping is just now supposed to be operating again after approx 3-4 months of us not even attempting to use it b/c it was so unrelyable. As far as Phase II is concerned, most of the cell phone companies have either already implemented it or are in the process of doing so now. Cingular is still working on it. Its already working for us, we found a young girl w/ her abuser due to Phase II.

I work in a department that now has the new 911 systems.. Not sure if that is what you were asking, but we have it, and have had it since about Sept of last year

Posted by: BLUE LINE

I believe they have resumed their installations and Rochester, Ma. is one of the first victims, hopefully Verizon has worked out the glitches.
