SHREWSBURY, Mass. -- It is supposed to be the season of giving, but in Shrewsbury, someone is on the take.
NewsCenter 5's Jim Boyd reported that everything from holiday displays to small, local landmarks have vanished within the last week.
"The thefts have occurred during the middle of the night, someone is coming up, talking the strings of lights. They took some lawn ornament elves and other various holiday decorations," said Shrewsbury police Lt. James Hurley.
Hurley said he cannot understand the motivation for the thief and advised homeowners to be on the lookout
"Just be aware if you hear anything in the yard -- check it out and pick up the phone and call us," he said.
Last Thursday, thieves made off with a 100-pound decorative ornament worth about $600 from the Lala Java coffee shop.
"It is going to be hard to replace because it was a custom piece -- it was a movie prop. I'm not sure what movie it came from," said Scott Boyers, of Lala Java.
Hurley said they have received some tips, but nothing concrete has turned up. Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call Shrewsbury police at: 508-841-8420.
