Either I am greedy or Amtrak is cheap.

Job Title: Police Officer
Department: Police & Security
Location: Boston, MA
Rate of Pay: $122.42/Day
Position No.: 305131

Or it could be both.

That comes out to about $32K per year, which isn't outrageously bad for an entry-level position. We're one of the highest paid PD's in Massachusetts, but only when you reach the upper pay steps. Our new hires don't make much more than what Amtrak is advertising.

For those of you wanting some info on the Amtrak PD....

Amtrak police officers are sworn Federal Law Enforcement officers as well as Massachusetts State Special's.
They do not attend the State Special Police Academy, nor do they accept it.
All new-hires must attend the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia.
Upon finishing the 13 week Basic Police Academy, Amtrak Police officers may be sent to additional training to obtain additional law enforcement powers in their assigned states.

Amtrak Police Officers have jurisdiction in 46 states.
Officers are represented by the FOP.
Currently, AMTRAK police fall under the Federal Railroad Retirement Act, which requires 30 years of service and 60 years of Age to retire.

Job Assignments are picked based on Seniority.
All amtrak officers have "national seniority" which means that if a position is open anywhere in the country, the officer can bid on that position and take his seniority with him.

Amtrak Police officers do not get take home cars, except for Canine unit officers.

Overtime is not regularly available. Generally it is assigned on a seniority basis.

Anymore questions, feel free to ask.

No, I'm all-set where I am now. The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know.

One of my best friends was Amtrak PD in Boston until he got laid-off in the early 1990's, and relocated to Florida. I was just wondering if you knew him.

Does anyone know if some of the changes for APD have ever materialized. I had heard since they havent had a contract for about 6-7 yrs, they were trying to get a big raise, plus a 25% raise from a railway subcommittee (joe biden sponsored) and of course more personnel. I see where they have nationwide hiring going on but as many PDs are facing hardships attracting qualified applicants. Seems like if the perks improve they''ll lose less for greener pastures and attract more...
