NEWTON -- Officer Rocco Marini already has two children, but he’s now an unofficial godparent to one of the city’s newest residents.

Marini helped deliver a 6-pound, 13-ounce baby boy at a Dedham Street home early Monday morning.

Marini had been on patrol a few blocks away from the house and was the first person to arrive after the parents called 911. Although he had trained for births, the authentic experience was much more intense.

"We had training in the (police) academy, but it’s nothing like the real deal," Marini said at a press conference yesterday.

Marini had to calm the father and a friend of the family while examining the mother, who was laying on the living room floor. Usually, Marini said, paramedics handle the birth while police just assist, but this baby was anxious to make his debut.

"I looked down and saw the head halfway out," Marini said. "I told (the mother) to keep pushing, that there was no time for transporting her."

A few minutes later, baby Jared was taking his first breaths and crying.

"I held him up and he started screaming, and I said ’Congratulations, you have a baby boy," Marini recalled.

Mother and baby were taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston where their conditions were unavailable.

Marini said the birth was a little overwhelming, but not as nerve-wracking as speaking to the press. And it might mean a second career.

"My wife said next time we have a baby, I have to deliver it," Marini joked.

Good Job Ptl Marini, Way to go! =D> =D>
