An undercover Dallas police officer was shot early Sunday morning in southwest Dallas by a teen-ager who robbed him, police said. A 17-year-old suspect was arrested shortly afterward less than two miles away, police said.
Officer Mark Rickerman was taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center and was in stable condition and in good spirits, police said late Sunday.
Rickerman has been on the force for about four years, police said. He is the third area officer to be shot in the line of duty in the past month.
Dallas officer Brian Jackson, 28, was fatally shot after a foot chase through a neighborhood Nov. 13, and Fort Worth officer Henry "Hank" Nava, 39, was shot Tuesday as he searched a mobile home for a wanted man. He died Thursday.
Undercover Dallas officers were combing the 400 block of Sunset Avenue about 12:30 a.m. Sunday to investigate recent car burglaries, police said. A teen-ager approached Rickerman and robbed him at gunpoint of some personal items, police said. When the robber saw Rickerman's badge, he fired at him, and the officer returned fire.
Rickerman was shot several times, but the robber was not hit, police said.
The robber left in a Ford Crown Victoria driven by another person.
Other undercover officers followed the car north to the 2100 block of St. Malo Circle, where the driver got out and ran, authorities said. Police had someone in custody late Sunday who they were confident would lead them to the driver.
The shooting suspect was taken to Lew Sterrett Justice Center. He faces an aggravated robbery charge and a probation violation out of Lancaster, police said.
The shooter's identity is being withheld because detectives are investigating him in connection with other crimes, police said.
