Thirteen months after a corrections officer at the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles was killed in a drive-by shooting, charges have been filed in his murder.
The accused killer of 34-year-old Duranthony "Randy" Evans: a then-14-year-old boy, who police believe was trying to earn his membership into the Latin Kings.
Kane County authorities Wednesday announced first-degree murder charges against four Latin Kings members or associates. Four other Aurora men associated with the gang also were charged with various weapons charges. While two suspects were at large, the other six men and two teenagers were arrested Tuesday.
Along with Evans' death, authorities said the charges implicate suspects in the murders of Mauro Salgado, 33, and Montrell Fluellen, 21.
Authorities said they recruited a member of the Latin Kings street gang to become an informant on various crimes committed in and around Aurora since March 2004. Details from that informant helped secure charges during a yearlong joint investigation by the Aurora Police Department, the FBI and Kane County law enforcement.
Police said the witness was crucial in securing charges against Eric Sanchez, 19, of Aurora, and a now-15-year-old juvenile with the murder of Evans.
Evans, of Aurora, was shot multiple times while he drove near Farnsworth and North avenues just outside Aurora city limits on Oct. 31, 2004.
