How do you feel about civil service, would you abolish it?

Posted by: HousingCop

Why would you abolish something that seems to be working perfectly well? C.S. was established to abolish patronism & favoritism in hiring practices throughout state, city & town government.

Granted, it could use some tweaking here & there but it seems to be fulfilling its purpose quite well. Besides, according to your age on your profile, (20) you aren't even elligable to take a CS exam for Police or Fire. Try for the HMEO&L (Heavy Motor Equipment Operator & Laborer) list and work a few years before you "deserve" your C.S. appointment to a PD or FD.

This comes from a cop who works for a NON-Civil Service deaprtment. Try one of those or move out of state for a cops job. I hear they are bending over backwards in NYC. Just don't come on here & complain that you expect a job to be handed to you. Sorry for any spelling errors. HC

I'm not saying we should get rid of it at all, im simply saying, there is a lot of kinks that need to be worked out. i know enough about civil service to say it, however, i am eligable to take the exam.

OK, so now you know my feelings on Civil Service. Now to answer your question..... should it be abolished? Absolutely not. If you think now that some miscreants and slackers fall through the cracks, imagine LE in this state without C.S. and imagine the bozo's who'd be pulling you over.

Piture the biggest wanna-be with a big fat wallet who's contributed to a Mayor or City Counselor and is rewarded with a slot in an academy. Put him behind the wheel of the Crown Vic where you ought to be, and there you have it. Sort of like some Sheriff's Departments in this state but with full LE powers. That's not a bash at my Sheriff brothers but that's how business is done in some counties.

Before you bitch, moan & complain, take a few tests. Then you can obtain a bitter attitude that some of us on this board enjoy. You're 21 for Chrissakes, I have underwear older than you. HC
