Two Police Officers Found Dead In West Hartford

The Associated Press

November 21 2005, 10:52 PM EST

WEST HARTFORD -- Two police officers were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide Monday night, according to several broadcast reports.

West Hartford police would not immediately identify the victims or confirm whether they were police officers. Authorities said the families of the two people were being notified.

Earlier in the evening, Sgt. J. Paul Vance, a state police spokesman, said a municipal police officer had been shot. Officers were called to a home on Ridgewood Road shortly after 6 p.m. and found a dead woman at the scene, police said.

Tactical teams, police dogs and a state police helicopter searched the area, but did not find anything. At about 9:15 p.m., officers found a dead man in the house where the woman's body was discovered, police said. Authorities then ended their search for the gunman.

West Hartford police and the Hartford state's attorney's office were handling the investigation. The bodies were brought to the chief medical examiner's office in Farmington for autopsies.

The home where the bodies were found is on a residential street near the Westfarms Mall. Other information was not immediately available.

(AP) W. HARTFORD, CT Newington Police Officer Ciara McDermott's body was solemnly carried from her home early Tuesday, as saluting law-enforcement officers stood at attention along her West Hartford driveway.

Reports say 30-year-old McDermott was shot and killed by a former boyfriend, State Trooper Victor Diaz, 37, who then turned the gun on himself. Both bodies were found in the home, reportedly by a West Hartford officer who recently began dating her.

The Hartford Courant is reporting Tuesday that Diaz was a cop in trouble. He was under suspension for drunk driving. He stopped by McDermott's en route to turn himself in to West Hartford police on a charge of stalking her.

McDermott was resource officer at Newington High School, who only hours before had been counseling students there upset over the death of a fellow student last week. She had worked there five or six years.

She is the second Newington officer killed this year: Master Police Officer Peter Lavery, 47, who was shot in a standoff last New Year's Eve.

McDermott was the daughter of a longtime police officer, Peter McDermott, who worked for the West Hartford and Windsor police departments, and now teaches at the police academy.

Prayers certainly go out to her family and the department. Horrible situation, especially considering it is the result of something we, who are on the job, deal with too much as it is.
