It was a good time...

Brawl mars Regis dance

By Laura Crimaldi / News Staff Writer
Sunday, November 2, 2003

WESTON -- A Regis College Halloween dance turned ugly early yesterday morning after a dispute at the student union touched off a parking lot melee that left one man stabbed in the thigh and six people under arrest.

Numerous fights erupted in a parking lot near Angela Hall just before 1 a.m. after a dispute between two groups shut down a dance sponsored by the campus multi-cultural group AHANA, according to police and college officials.

"It was a sight to behold. You'd be in the parking lot and have one fight under control when the next one would break out," said Weston Police Sgt. Daniel Maguire. "Have you ever gone to Fenway Park and seen the wave? Well, that's what it looked like."

It took 30 officers from campus police, Weston, Waltham, Lincoln, Sudbury, Newton, Wayland, Wellesley and state police in Framingham and Weston to contain the 300-plus crowd, Maguire said.

None of the people involved in the melee is a student at Regis College nor the Art Institute, a Boston-based school that houses students on the Weston campus.

"They screen (visitors) as they are coming in," said Marjorie Arons-Barron, a Regis College spokeswoman. "They had far more people than were expected. There were so many people that came in there were some outsiders that slipped by without checking in."

An unidentified suspect stabbed Samuel Aime, 19, of 655 Massachusetts Ave., Boston, in the right thigh during the mayhem, Maguire said. Knives and broken glass were recovered from the scene, but police do not know what was used to assault Aime.

Aime received six stitches at Newton-Wellesley Hospital before being booked at the Weston Police Department for trespassing and disorderly conduct charges, Maguire said.

Also charged with trespassing and disorderly conducted were Benson Charles, 19, of 3943 Washington St., Apt. 3, Roslindale; Andason Ducasse, 22, of 4 Meacham St., Apt. 7B, Somerville; Calvin Hodge, 20, of 16 West Seldon St., Boston; Jermaine Taylor, 20, of 25 Fairview Road, Apt. 25, Framingham; and Luis Deleon, 20, of 265 Hollis St., Framingham, Maguire said.

They will be arraigned tomorrow morning in Waltham District Court.

The early-morning arrest was the second in a 24-hour period for Hodge, who was arrested in Southborough and charged with driving with a suspended license at 3:36 p.m. on Friday.

People smashed windshields and threw bottles during the fight, police said.

Witnesses spotted another man being beaten under a large group of people, but the victim was taken away by friends before police determine his identity.

Dr. Mary Jane England, president of Regis College, issued a letter to students yesterday offering support to students who witnessed the fight.

"As you know, we have a zero tolerance policy on violence. In accordance with that, those charged in this incident will be permanently banned from campus," she wrote.

Maguire said the incident was out of character for the quiet women's college campus.

"That was highly unusual," he said.

***Note: More than 20+ folks were cuffed and carted away. Many were later released or summonsed....

Nothing like some good Halloween fun!!

Posted by: PATS246

You mean to tell me that people carry knives on college campuses??? I thought college campuses were quiet little protected places from the outside world and thats why some colleges are unarmed. Thank goodness for Dr. Mary Jane England president of Regis college who said she "issued a letter to students yesterday offering support to students who witnessed the fight." I'm sure that will make everyone feel better and everyone can get together and hold hands and "talk it out".

Don't these people see a pattern in local campus violence, or do they just want to look the other way and think it won't happen here. RIDICULOUS

Hopefully none of the cops got hurt

Posted by: RPD931

Mazz, No one got hurt...or should I say, no Police Officers got hurt. As far as the "subjects" are concerned I can't speak for them. Let's just say we held our ground VERY WELL. Can you say "Batter Up!!"??.

While it was initially scarey, as it was like 300+ of them against 6 of us and it took a few minutes for help to arrive... it was a good experience and fun after reinforcements (25 additional PO's) arrived. Let me tell you, those State Troopers don't mess around, they were in there swinging and spraying!! yahoo!!

Thanks to all that assisted!

Posted by:

See what happens when you try to have a good time & the "outsiders" come in and screw it all up!! I bet the "multicultural group" AHANA may be hiring a detail or two or twelve the next stabbing, .........er I mean dance they throw.

Won't Calvin Hodge, 20, of 16 West Seldon St., Boston get his license re-instated so he won't have to go through the awful task of being bonded out yet again? Being a two time loser in 24 hours says something, don't you think??

And thank goodness for Dr. Mary Jane England, president of Regis College, who issued a letter to students offering support to students who witnessed the fight. I bet those sheltered women have never seen such a sight in their lives!! They are the dummies who invited them to begin with.

Seems like quite a shindig they had over there. I only wish I was there to see some of these nitwits get a "wood shampoo".

Posted by: RPD931

HousingCop, you definately missed a good one. I think Mr. Hodge will serve some time - he did have a 10 page BOP... quite a few of the charges referred to not respecting PO's if you catch my drift. He got a GOOD restraining as he resembled his "track record"!

However, as the article says, there were more "attendees" than usual - about twice the normal amount (approx. 150), therefore we only had 4 Campus Police Officers on for the event. Usually with a 300+ crowd we would have 8-10 PO's for it. AHANA has 4 or 5 more of these "Bashes" scheduled for the school year, it will be interesting if they actually happen.

Oh yeah, another "multi-cultural" group, AMIGAS (Latina/latino), has a gig planned this Friday... Oh boy! - "Bring it on!!"

Posted by: ejk55

Keith, good job. I am proud of ya. You have learned a lot from me. C-ya Saturday

Posted by:

RPD931, pank: pank: pank: pank:

Only a 10 page BOP on 20 year old Mr Hodge? Seems that he's a small fish compared to some of his cohorts who reside on West Seldon St! Nothing like seeing them wearing a turban in the docket the next AM all hung over huh? It brings a tear to my eye.

I can't wait to buy the Saturday & Sunday papers to see how the AMIGAS dance party turned out. I myself miss the Janet Reno Dance Parties on SNL. Quite a fun time watching Will Ferrel play her boogying on down!!

Thank God for BAPERN huh? Maybe you guys should have turned out the regional squad of Ninja Turtles! D'oh. Did I open up a new thread or an old wound or what!! Good work guys.

Posted by: RPD931

kmf, Who called us "Security"??? All the media I read ( I missed the ch. 7 spot) called us Campus POLICE. Event the President for the First time called us Police instead of Safety.

An eye opener for admin.

Posted by: Captain Caveman

I'm sick of College Administrators. Bunch of ignorant idiots. Well you want some advise from the old captain; Lock every student, and non student up!!! Join me my brotherin!, use those handcuffs!, get some overtime in court!...........F THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey guys....wake up!!! The same way cops go on websites using alias to get info/evedince on pediphiles, hate groups etc. Cop Haters can go on MASSCOPS to get dirt on us. Not so much "evidence" but quotes that can nail you to the proverbial cross. Comments such as "azz whoopin'", "we beat the shit out of those punks", and "wooden shampoo" can cause you to loose your credability, negate a valide use of force explanation or even you house if you are in the wrong coupled with similar comments.
Also there the title Sergeant was added to one if not two of the profiles of the cops making those comments, guys (or gals) its up to you to make sure your officers are not walking around demonstrating this additude let alone yourselves. I understand your frustration concerning the mentality of the uninformed (read clueless) but things like this belong in the locker room, in the cruiser or some were else that it falls on our ears only. You wouldnt hand an advisary your Glock, so dont fuel them with verbal ( or written) ammo. Oh yeah....by the way if I'm starting to sound like a complete ass, its because I'm trying to help, I've had a soul bearing tyriad blow up in my face a time or two. Good job Regis P.D. and mutual aid agencies.

Take it easy. Joe Mac

mac,

You are absolutely correct. My reference to "we beat the shit out of those punks" is inappropriate and more or less means we didn't take any crap, and nobody was "beaten up". I guess I was stilling coming off a adrenaline high when I typed it. Ideally, "the crowd was contained".

Posted by: CampusOfficer

No cop ever "beats the crap" out of someone. They are "guided, supported, and directed to the concrete."

Posted by: RPD931

In my arrest reports, I used the term "directed and brought to the ground".

B, you'd be proud... I did it the "Ol' evening shift way"

HMMM. Good advice Mt. IDA, Your honor I would like to summons the follwoing persons to the witness stand:
Gunnerysgthartman. Gil, Masstroopers, Tomahawk, Dekk, PBCcop, Shakemdown16, Mazz, Housingcop.......... what screennames on a BBS aren't reliable witnesses?

Posted by:

Hey Gunny,

I know I'd make a reliable witness but would you melt down like Jack Nickleson in A Few Good Men, "You Can't Handle The Truth"

Would this cheap ass state even send you a plane ticket from Paris Island to here to testify, or would they lend you their MBTA commuter pass?

I can see where people are coming from when they say that the cop haters will post these threads on their websites. I have been to their cop bashing websites as well and have seen first hand the whining puke faced punks who post there. All pissed off that some cop took away their dime bags and broke their skateboards in half as punishment.

They just post what they want on those cop bashing websites anyways. There is no counterpoint views tolerated on those BB's like there is on here, right Herr Moderator?

Since when does MT. Ida have a police force? Wow, I should get back into the Newton loop.

Posted by: RPD931

Last I knew they were "Public Safety" with No more powers than Grandpa Moses... Actually I believe they are Pinkerton Security - even better.

Posted by: GUNNERYSGTHARTMAN

The Gunny hears that Mt.Ida has two of it's security officers at reserve in-service in Foxboro. These two "characters" identify themselves as the Chief and the Deputy Chief, wear full uniforms, and carry firearms.

This is rather unusual since they are an unarmed security department...........

Posted by: Badge 2

Hey Gunny, what you here is true and false. Lets start with the truth. There are to people in the reserve Academy, that is very true. As far as us being characters that is very much a fact. ha ha ha... Mount Ida is a Public Safety Department. However yes it is true that our check comes from a security department, not Pinkerton though. So let me ask you does that make us scum or less trained. Oh and before I forget yes we are unarmed on most occsions however from time to time we are armed usually either the Chief or myself. The one time that I did where a weapon to the academy is the night that I went to the range right after.
So in closing Mount Ida Public Safetry and proud of it.

Back about 10 years ago in my big drinking days, I was at the White Hen Pantry next to E-5 in West Roxbury getting a sangwich from "Sandwich Nazi Nick" & some big dude from Mt. Ida Police came in with an unmarked cruiser & what looked like a .380 in a pancake holster. Patch said POLICE but the gun screamed "off duty" to me.

Since I was involved in the "Mt. _da" caper a few years back, I didn't want to go anywhere near him for fear he may recognize me. For those of you who don't remember, it was fashionable around the years 1991 to steal the "I" in Mt. Ida to make it say "Mt. _da"

What security company does your check come from Badge2? And another thing, why the only temporary use of firearms? My thought on the subject is "You never need a gun till you need one real bad".

Posted by: Badge 2

Yes sir.
At one time there was a Mount Ida Police Department. I totally agree with you about the firearms. Lets just leave it at this, what the college wants is what the college gets. Most of the guys who work here are auxiliary or specials in another town. So believe me its not for a lack of training on our part.
Don't get my ealier mess. confused I would like nothing more to be sworn in as a Newton Special, unfortunatlly it is out of our hands.

Posted by: RPD931

When did they drop Pinkerton??

Posted by: Badge 2

Pinkerton was bought by Securitas. It is my understanding that they are one of the largest co. in the world. However to be honest with you that really didn't or does not effect us.

Posted by: csauce30

Badge 2,

Whats the time frame for Mt. Ida getting Newton Special powers? I know for a fact that Mt. Ida's "Chief" has been saying you guys are getting them "soon" for at least the last 3 years or so. Any developments on that issue?
Do you guys still have those old beater cruisers with the clear lightbars?

Posted by: Badge 2

Hey Csause,
I herd your missed at the Aux. Hows things going. In regards to the powers, we really don't have any control over that as I sure you realize. Its up to the Newton Chief. Cruisers No we have newer ones. However I do remember the ones that you are talking about. . O'well take it easy be safe.

Posted by: kdk240

Not to chime in here but I feel I must, I now work ft. as a p/o and worked as an aux with both Mt. Ida's chief and their dep. chief, both are very good at what they do, very good cops and l/e instructors to boot. I'd go through a door with either one of them and a few others like them on any day because there that good. My saying is this , I know what they deal with up there, I did not work at the IDA, but heard what went on,, so for those of you out there don't knock a person unless you know a little bit about them, as fsr as I'm concerned, I never have or will forgot where I came from to get where I am and what I had to do to get there, unlike some who just took the job because it was there.
And another thing it doesn't mater who you are, if you wear the badge, unless your an ass H?::": we all deserve professional curtosy.
But then again not always in this line because for some stupid reason everything has to be a pissing match. All keep safe

Oh, will you please put the violin away and open up a grammar book ?

Posted by: RPD931

6 Regis College Campus Police Officers were given letter of Commendation by the Weston Police Chief for the Halloween night meelee, for their "professionalism and proficiency". VERY nice.

Woohoo! Sweet, something else for my file.

Posted by: mpd61

Congratulations to Regis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
=D>

And Hat's off to the Weston Chief~

Posted by: fscpd907

=D> CONGRATULATIONS

Hey RPD931,

What did the Regis Adminstration have to say about the incident and Police response ? I hope they get a copy of the commendation and see that their Officers use "professionalism and proficiency" during their duties.

Posted by: Irish Wampanoag

a little.Hey Regis did those gang bangers that shot up a boston neighborhood on wednesday ever arrive at your institution? Boston PD announced on BAPERN wednesday at 600pmish I think that several individuals did a drive by shooting in roxbury/dorchester and possibly heading to a relatives dorm at Regis.

Posted by: RPD931

fscpd907, Yes Admin received a copy. There really hasn't been much stated by the Admin about us with the exception of a Verbal pat on the back through a statement released by the President (something to the effect of "Campus Police did a good job").

BHCCPD, The relative of the driver lived here last year and is not a current resident now.

MPD61, Yeah the Weston Chief (the whole department really) are excellent. We've been fortunate to have a very good relationship with them for quite some time unlike alot of Campus PD's with their Local PD.

Posted by: SpecialED

I understand that Securitas, and the administration at Mt. Ida are very excited to hear that there "Chief and Deputy" (aka Director and Assistant Director of security) are still carrying firearms, while in a Mt. Ida uniform (Police) to in-service.

Guess the boys must be "going to the range again".

I have no issues with Mt. Ida or Security gaurds, just with impersonating a Police Officer, and generally acting like a yahoo.

Posted by: RPD931

OK... I don't work at Mt. Ida, but I hate the title "Security Guard", its an insult!!. It's like calling a Doctor and EMT or a Trooper a Campus Police Officer.... there is a difference "Security Officer" or "Public Safety Officer" is much more appropriate since they do physically interact with the Campus Community. A guard is someone whom sits at a desk or stands at a door.

A buddy of mine works there and a couple of my current co-workers used to work there also and from what they've told me the shit really flies around there. Whether or not they have arrest powers means very little if they are trained right. If something goes down, detain and call the locals to finish the job.

It is unfortunate that the Ida Administration doesn't see the need for Campus Police Officers. Contract Security is tough, but they do what they have to do...

Posted by: Badge 2

RPD 931 thanks for the words. As far as Special ED, Hey you may have forgot to mention any thing you wanted to ask me to my face while you had the chance at the academy. PLEASE feel free to stop by, maybe I can clarify some things for you!
