hi

Im only 19 can i still take the exam and get a job in the house of corrections? After the exam are there any other test that I would have to take? Are there alot of open postions in mass? How much do corrections officers make? I am a current crimanl justice student, will this help me in in? Any info would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff, you are 19 years old.

You cannot drink.
You cannot carry a gun.

In two years, everyone applying for these jobs will have vetran's preference, which means it will be next to impossible for you to get on anywhere, unless you want to go and earn those points yourself.

Best advice-stay in school, change your major. You stand the same chance getting hired with a degree in spanish, accounting, english, computers, or anything else, anyway.

Maybe not what you wanna hear, but them is the facts.

Go to the Mass DOC site. They will tell you everything you need to know. As far as age, 19 is fine, but the next exam isn't till Feb 25, 2006. As far as a degree, you don't need one, just do good on the test.

Yes. I realize your post was referring specifically toward corrections, however, two things come to mind...

1. You will find the same people competing for both corrections and LE jobs.

2. Many of these people will not have a 4 year dgree in anything, but if they do, it will be CJ. I just think a degree in something else will (1) set you apart, and (2) give you a something to fall back on in case you don't get in where you want, or it doesn't turn out to be what you expected.

I do not mean to discourage you, but this is the advice I have given my own 16 yo son.
I hope you do get what you want, but it is nice to have something else going, just in case.
MANY people get into this work and burn out FAST, it is better for you if you have an alternative, IMHO

jeff, i am 22 yrs old and just graduated from college in May with a degree in CJ. I just graduated for the DOC Academy in Shirley. All i can say is that I am making a crap load more than my buddies who graduated with a business degree. Corrections is definitely not what it was 10 yrs ago and you can make a great living for yourself. Good luck with everything and if you have any questions feel free to ask seeing how you are in the same boat I was 4 years ago.

Just make sure that if you plan on going into policing, after you get bored with Corrections, that you are getting ur CJ degree where the Quinn Bill Applies.
