Framingham seeks auxiliary cops
The Framingham Auxiliary Police will hold an open house tomorrow 11/07/05 at 7:30 p.m. at the Framingham Police Department to recruit new members. The Auxiliary Police are a volunteer organization that has been assisting the Framingham Police Department for more than 63 years.
Some of the activities they take part in include weekend patrols, assisting at the police station, helping out at the Boston Marathon, Concerts at the Green and the Flag Day parade.
The Auxiliary Police has received Presidential Service Awards for its community service in both 2003 and 2004.
The agency is open to those who have been residents of Framingham for at least six months, are U.S. citizens, have no criminal record and are older than 21.
Applications will be available, and all applicants are subject to an entrance exam, interviews and a background check. All new members are expected to complete a 200-hour academy training program and to commit to between 15 and 20 hours of community service each month.

why do they have a residency requirement? I'm quite ignorant about their department, so there may be a damn good reason for the requirement. However, the question still begs to be asked: wouldn't they get more members if they opened up their doors to non-residents?
