Bill Would Toughen Rules For Young Drivers

BOSTON -- A new proposal on Beacon Hill would toughen rules for teenage drivers.

The bill would increase the number of hours parents must supervise their teens before they can obtain a driver's license at age 16.

The measure is proposed by Ipswich Republican Brad Hill and its supported by the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Currently, teenagers with learners' permits must have at least 12 hours driving with adult supervision. The bill would increase the period to 30 hours.

The Legislature's transportation committee considers the measure this week.

The number of fatal crashes involving teens is on the rise. In 1998, there were 20 fatal crashes involving 16 and 17 year olds.

Last year, there were 27.
