Police memorial honors all who served By Michele McPhee

The Boston Police Department is the oldest in the nation, and now there is a memorial dedicated to the thousands who have served it since 1854 when the first watchmen took to the streets.
The Boston Police Memorial was unveiled outside One Schroeder Plaza yesterday under a flawless blue sky, commemorating all of the department's uniformed members, not just those killed in the line of duty.
There are no names etched into the marble, but there is a timeline of BPD historic events alongside a patrolman's shield and a silver flame which will cast a police-blue light.
``We finally have a police memorial here at headquarters where it belongs,'' said retired BPD Superintendent Robert Faherty, who is a member of the Boston Police Relief Association. ``It commemorates the officers who made Boston the world-class city it is today, and the Boston Police Department – the best in the nation.''
The memorial is the idea of Capt. Bob Flaherty, who is the commander of District 4 in the South End. It took a decade of planning and fund-raising before the memorial could be created.
``The cops don't even know how hard their jobs are – they just do it,'' Flaherty said.
